A factory V8 90 had a 1.2 LT230 but the 1.4 may be fine if you have bigger tyres or are towing a lot Dave

All depends really. Have you sat down with a calculator and worked out what you want to achieve? I have done this when spec'ing Merc Sprinter final drive ratios, Jeep axle ratios or Landrover transfer box ratios. It's all in the numbers and tyre size (revolutions per mile). When I used to buy new Sprinter vans I would always look at engine rpm for a given speed (assuming the power was there to achieve it).

I’ve had all combos of V8 and drive trains and would fit a 1.4 tbox with LT77 (for ease) or R380.
I’d go with a 1.4 tbox. I had a factory V8 3.5 which was fine on its original 205x16 tyres; but over-geared and frustrating to drive with 235/85x16 on its original 1.2 Tbox. I currently have a 3.9 14CUX serp non-cat and it still feels slightly tall geared with a 1.2 (however it does have the taller 0.73 fifth gear). I’m still probably going to step it down to a 1.3. Or 1.4. I wouldn’t recommend fitting an LT85. Although close to period correct it’s a noisy box. Even when in best condition they are prone to whine from the layshaft which totally spoils the V8 loveliness in all gears except 4th. I’ve had two LT85s rebuilt and after a 1000 miles or so they both started whining. Instead I’d spec an R380, out of a facelift disco 1 V8 complete with bellhousing. However if the originating car was anything but a V8 and you don’t want to change the floor plates and props then the LT77 is perfectly good enough (as it was in RRC for many years). The RRC bellhousing keeps the engine to gearbox distance correct for a 1984 model without having to change the props, gearbox mounts, floor plates, seat box and transmission.tunnel and bulkhead diaphragm. I would agree with Lodelaner about the LT85, its quite an agricultural box. I had mine rebuilt but it was still pretty much as it was noise wise pre rebuild. It not an easy shift until it’s warmed up though especially 1st to 2nd but usually I don’t use 1st for setting off. I do tend to like it though and 4th and 5th gears are ok and not too noisy.

Thanks for the info guys big help been setback with the project for a few weeks due to COVID but my dad has the two axles in his garage whilst he’s shielding give the old plant fitter something to do 🤣 are there any manuals available with torque setting etc for the axles
