HELP Servo oil !
Hi!

As an emergency solution I had to fill up the servo oil reservoir on my Defender Puma 90 2007 today as I noticed the reservoir was empty and the steering servo was struggling.
The only oil I had available in the car was Castrol Axle EPX 80W-90.
Will this axle oil do the job on permanent basis, or should I drain the system and change the servo oil?

There's bound to be someone along soon who has a better knowledge than me, but I would say it needs replacing.

Servo (brakes?) oil is a hydraulic oil. Axel oil would be a lubricant. It probably gets you home and I expect it works but anything associated with the brakes needs to be 100%. There's a reason why hydraulic fluid is specified rather than lubricating oil.

Whether you need to flush this oil out, and how you do it (other than disconnecting and using an air line, I wouldn't know.

On a side, the brakes and hydraulics on my old International Harvester Tractor all ran off the same engine and gearbox oil Confused

Thanks for the reply, I'm talking about the steering servo oil, not the brake servo ๐Ÿ˜Š

I think the OP is referring to the power steering fluid.
I think EP 80 is too thick for the application, especially in low temperatures. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Specifically itโ€™s Central Hydraulic Fluid you need, not combined power steering and ATF. The LR part number is STC50519, but pretty much anything marked CHF will do. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I'm not an oil geek, but basic thoughts are axle oils are there to reduce friction (lubricate), cool and protect against corrosion.
Hydraulic oils are also anti corrosion, lubricate but their main property is a strong resistance to volume reduction under pressure.
Remember Originally water with additives was used as a hydraulic fluid. But now use a synthetic oil instead as its properties are far better.

Axle oild will be far too heavy. Even more so in Norway in winter.
For me 100% drain and refil. Thumbs Up

I've bled mine before so I assume you just Just bleed it till it's empty. Refil and repeat. Moving the steering from side to side should remove any air. Top up as required
Do it somewhere easy to clean. Makes a mess
