I presume that the orange removal option still has the branding in black-on-black due to it being laser-cut into the stainless. i.e. there is an orange plate underneath the stainless tread that can be removed. Not sufficiently de-branded IMO.

How long have you had them fitted Stew and have they lasted well?

I'm also not a fan of the Masai branding, but may consider them if they 'last'.

I'm looking to replace a set which aren't awful, but not nice closeup. The tread plates have started to crack up and show surface rust. Not to mention slight bubbles on the edges of the tubes.

Are the originals & replicas just poor quality or did the tubular style side steps always require some preventive maintenance i.e dinitrol in the cavity?

The originals are errr rubbish & seemingly no amount of Dinitro/ACF50/Chip Fat etc will preserve them...dreadful & mine need changing so I'm watching this with interest. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Likewise. My originals haven’t lasted 2 years despite dinitrol in the internals etc.

Personally Grenadier I think that the last lot of pictures of the Titanic look worse.

In my completely unprofessional opinion I recon you’ve got just before the wifey utters those words, oooh look, there’s money in the account, let’s buy a new kitchen....... Whistle

I have a different set from Masai but with the same treatment and I'm pretty pleased with them. The defender hasn't had a chance to get outside much since fitting them so can't really comment on how well they endure the weather.

The first set were damaged during transit (most of the box was missing) and had scraped a large section of paint off, but at least that meant I could see they were properly treated underneath. Had good service from Masai - I told them about the transit damage and they met me on a Saturday so I could replace them in person.

I'm also not a fan of branding but I figured with these I could probably get a new plate made up if it starts to bother me too much.

My main motivation for these was to stop door prangs since I'm getting it repainted but if I were to go back I'd probably get the masai fire and Ice style. Much easier to get in and out with those as they sit under the sill and probably deflect doors just as well.

It’s a value game I have to play. There’s one welder within 50km of me, and he charges a fortune. Because he can. And it’s France. I wouldn’t get the same quality strip, repair, zinc treatment and powder coat for the cost of the Masais and they’re also brand new. So new is now not just nice, but cost effective.

As for bartering with Mrs Grenadier, I’m not afraid to admit that she holds the purse strings (ex financier) however she just spent ten times what I’ll be spending on the Def this summer on her garden last year, so I think we’re good. Still have to run it past her though. There might be a new cushion on the horizon. Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

The Uproar link is for rocksliders or cills, not for side steps. I can’t see side steps on their site at all.

Yikes! Ok so mine aren't as bad as that!

Although does have that lovely beautiful gorgeous (soon to be weight saving) bronze orange peeling effect...

I'm tempted to buy a cheap example of fire and ice and then budget for the next annual set Laughing This is not however the way to do this....

Mine only have bubbled slightly on the corner of the drivers side rear edge (approx 4 years) and then that rusted part on top which I'd temporarily re-coated to hide the eye sore.... I'd seen a pair (on an adventure edition) which had a textured coating in place of the paint. It looked nice and durable, although no idea what it was!

This thread (& lockdown boredom) has also got me contemplating changing my original, & absolute rubbish OEM LR quality, side steps...the Masai are looking favourable as Zinc Coated but I'm also drawn to the neatness of the rock slider/step combo, anyone got these for feedback?
