My grandad had one in Kent for 30 odd years many many years ago and done VERY well out of it , but not sure how one would do these days

That’s a great idea especially if it’s sourced locally to you, supporting your farmers and community with fresh produce.
If you have a local butcher or bakers it may be an idea to have a chat with them as they will have a good idea of the local market and numbers of potential customers you might appeal to. Sorry I cant offer any advice, but I wish you all the best. You can't beat a local shop with low miles food - perfect. Tip would be to offer a few lines out of the norm. Our local village shop does awesome, huge samosa's, they sell out very quickly.

We're very lucky to have a great greengrocer in the village, W A Ward to big them up! Also have numerous great local farm shops which sell excellent fruit and veg.
I don't know if it is just lockdown but there does seem a swing towards greengrocer and farm shops around here. I just hate going in supermarkets and seeing all the plastic wrapped fruit and veg! Good luck sounds a great venture! I'd imagine you might need to supply local resturants and pubs as well as the public to make things pay? James

We have a fruit and veg stall outside our pub every Thursday. They're cheaper than the supermarkets and the stuff is lovely too.

Where are you going to go to get the fruit and veg? My Dad did it for several years ~ up at 4am, six days a week, to go to the wholesale market and there was lots of cash deals with various favourite salesmen on different stalls.
Then are you going to run the shop or put staff in? There's a business there but it's really hard work. |

I expect most people will go back to buying fruit and veg at the supermarket once things are back to a normal (what ever that will be?) We have a couple of wholesalers round our way who do the hard work and buy from Covent Garden haul it into east anglia and then distribute to all the smaller shops and greengrocers. Local food is a bit of a pipe dream as most food is seasonal if it’s local (other than a few things that can be stored like spuds) so a large proportion of what you sell will come from Europe / Africa or further afield. Most punters don’t understand this so if you don’t sell something the chances are the supermarkets are flying trucking or training it in. And people are fickle. Local seasonal produce is well catered for with veg box companies. But you get what you are given, not what you want. There is a good reason why there are no local greengrocers near you. Best of luck if you do have a go but please make sure you have a good advice and walk into it open eyed. |

I will put staff in, might pop in some days if golfs cancelled but thats it lol. Ive been trying to eat more fruit for last few years. So its a shop i would like for myself so i can just take a bunch home each day. Not doing it for money although definitely dont want it running at a loss. Thing is i live is a posh area and ive noticed posh people are very tight with there money, so not sure people would pay the money for better quality fruit and veg. |

Remember the trick of earning money through greengrocery is to buy the right quantities as fruit and veg by their very nature are perishable so if you do not sell you end up throwing your stock away. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..
