Propane blow torch
Hi
I need to remove quite a few rusted in bolts on a casting and want to use heat. As I caravan a lot I have bottles of propane.
Is there a propane torch that fits to a standard calor gas/safefill bottle? Also would I need a regulator or are regulators normally built in to the torch?

Yes to both questions. You need a regulator, and can get a torch. The one I use is large and mighty hot. Not certain of make and whether you can get smaller ones though
I am certain roofers use the torches when doing felt roofs, so Screwfix may have them.

A roofing torch might be a bit expensive ( £90 for the torch ) and a bit overkill.

A plumbers torch with map gas will be a better option, but you’re still going to be paying upwards of £50 for the torch and £16 for the gas

Hi Thanks for the mention of screwfix. They either do small specialised bottles and torches. This did though lead me to a company called Bullfinch who supply the full torch kit to fit standard Calor gas bottles.
As I use safefill gas bottles which use the standard adapter I can fill them myself at any LPG outlet including service stations.

Alternatively you could go down the oxy-propane route, but it may be overkill. It depends how stuck your bolts are.

I think Machine Mart do them. They come in a kit with a regulator. I’ve pondered picking one up myself as my gas cylinder gets used for camping about once every 2 years and thought it’d b handy to use it for other things. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

If going for mapp gas the best torch by a long way is the Rothenberger Super Fire 2 , should be able to get the torch plus mapp gas for circa £65 all in. Just search for the Rothenberger Super Fire 2 . Most online plumbers merchants give the best price.

Mapp gas gets far hotter than standard propane, and the torch concentrates the heat just where you need it.

Induction nut heaters are the best, but at £400 plus I just can’t justify the expense for occasional use.

The Rothenberger Mapp torches are brilliant bits of kit and the gas does last for a long time (trust me I've used on an Alfa Romeo...) Land Rovers are pretty much immune to rust in comparison Rolling with laughter
