The Grenadire is an embarrassing rip-off vanity project...

Talking of vanity projects - what would you call JLR's project to increase production to 1 million vehicles per annum? I believe some in JLR called it Project Icarus Rolling with laughter

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make - there was obviously no way of upgrading the old Defender platform to meet any kind of modern standards or expectations. The Grenadire is an all-new vehicle - so whilst its archaic basic design means that it is inevitably hugely compromised in terms of dynamic ability, safety and so on, it should hopefully have a cabin normal people can fit in, doors that don’t leak, the most basic safety and emissions equipment etc.

I’m not sure how a business’s plan to sell more products can be called a vanity project - if JLR are doing it, it’s because they need profits - something that the Grenadire will never return.

new Defender - a masterpiece in marketing guff - 3 models named after wheelbases they don't have...

Why don’t you remind us what the wheelbases of the last 90 and 130 actually measured?

The Defender accessories seem fairly well done, albeit not for me. The Bronco’s problem is that the silly add ons with their silly names are the whole picture - underneath, it’s just another pound shop pickup.

So whats the price delta for that extra 10mph on a 90 rather than a 90HT?

For me the difference would be £4 - £5k, depending on boxes ticked. For that saving I’d quite happily stick the CC on at 50mph and be a one man traffic jam up & down the A9. Laughing Laughing I’d be more concerned about getting my Oztent in there, though it could ride on top. Confused

And re resale price difference, I usually keep car for 10 years so added depreciation on a HT wouldn’t be an issue. I kept my D3 for 13 years, may she Rust in Pieces. Thumbs Up

Not sure how you see the saving - if I spec D200 HT and D200 S Car - i get the same price and more stuff on the Car for the money... so no saving by buying the commercial

Other than the flat rear floor - which is the reason for specing it..

VAT back is not an option for me and doesn’t make any difference in what I’d choose, HT or car. it’s just about being able to spec up a toy/road trip/camping jolly car that I want for a price I want/SWMBO will allow. Whistle

PS And as it’s only going to be me in the car I don’t need the rear seat pavlova, plus I love that rear storage. I was even wondering if i could replace the passenger seat with my Engel. Whistle

I’m sure somewhere will offer a flat-floor for the 90 sooner or later - I’d consider an aftermarket commercial variant given the single factory 90 HT spec.

MHEV...has anybody got any reliable information as to what the expected battery life actually is & replacement costs?

This issue, to my mind, is a really BIG issue as I tend to 'buy to keep', I don't do finance, lease, PCP etc & feel that the battery longevity & associated replacement costs seem to something most, if not all manufacturers seem to shrouding in mist...I can't even find it contained in any small print.

Has any new Defender purchaser asked this question? Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Surely if you bought a base 90, and didn’t need the seats, you could unbolt them and put them in the shed until you sell it? That would get rid of the step. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Can someone explain the Tax and Speed comments about buying the HT?

The road tax/VED is £265/yr, incl first tax. But as it’s a commercial and over a certain weight it’s speed limit is 50mph on single carriage way roads, 60 on d/cways and 70 on Mways.

This issue comes up regularly on this forum and is not true. As it's 4wd, it's considered a Dual Purpose Vehicle and normal car speed limits apply. It has nothing to do with how much tax is due nor any classification on the V5.

DELETED - what I wrote applied to 4 seaters - the 90/110 HT's are clearly 2 seaters Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

What you wrote would still be applicable as the definition of being a dual purpose vehicle include "constructed or adapted so that the driving power of the engine is, or can be selected to be, transmitted to all wheels of the vehicle" regardless of the number of seats.

That is still a challenge though - I didn't realise that the 90 in particular was so portly. Darren
