IRB do a one piece rear halfshaft, i believe others out there too possible even BritPart. No experience of them but had them on my list should it be an issue. James

Is it an early or a later 110 axle.
Just recently there was a topic on axle straightness. If not very straight it can chew up splines. Note that JLR di not specify very tight tolerances, such as camber, even in a rear axle. Hope this is not the case. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Thanks JOW, I'll pop Ian at IRB a message and see what he has to say
Hi Dinnu, it's a 2005 TD5 which I think uses the p38 short-nose type of diff. It doesn't appear to be a dodgy casing though, I've never noticed any unusual tyre wear in the 5+ years I've had the vehicle. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop 1989 300Tdi 90 Soft top 1992 200Tdi 90 Truck cab with Land Cruiser axles |

My school of thought on half shafts and drive flanges has always been to run standard flanges and upgrade from the inside out on the basis that you'll most likely suffer breakages at the weakest point in your driveline. Running HD flanges and shafts could effectively render the diff/prop your weak point if they're not upgraded. Conversely, running standard flanges should help to protect your diff/shafts/prop as your flanges will likely go pop first. They're also an easy swap in the field and are only a fiver each. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

If you do want one piece shafts (a big improvement, in my opinion) then those from a later Disco 1 will fit. Alternatively, many people have fitted those from Britpart and there haven't been any horror stories yet. Darren

I have a set of 300 tdi one piece shafts that I recently paid a forum member £40 for if you want them for the same money I am near the NEC, I'm not using them as they are exactly the same as the disco 300 tdi ones I already have, I also have the original low mileage 2 part ones that I am not using.
PM me if interested DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Britpart on mine. No issues with them, only good news 2 years down the line.

Fairly certain both IRB and LOF use the Britpart version. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

The only difference between an IRB or LOF ones and britpart is the coating. (Britpart come untreated), 300tdi ones fit but are not as strong as the later td5 and puma shafts.
Depending on your usage, Ashcroft HD shafts May be a waste of money. I went with the cheapskate option of welding up the standard flanges before they failed but would have gone for the IRB ones if they were available at the time. |

I use old disco one piece half shafts with the rear locker without problem or breakage.

how timely... and hoping I can jump on the back of this with some questions for a friend. They're thinking of upgrading to 1 piece half shafts after suspected deterioration of the original ones.
They're getting a bit of a thud on take-up after 10+mph and is unsure if it could be worn bushes or half shafts. He had the flange off and thought play was v. minimal for the flange and shaft. Teeth seemed fine.. OP were you getting any symptoms prior (or to the others is a thud on take up indicative of half shaft wear)? |

90GTR, the 'thump on' does it come with a change of direction too each time (ie fwd to reverse?) sounds like bush to me rather than shafts/DMs Cheers

Ref the grease/wear and Ashcrofts, it advised on Ashcroft site to remove the inner hub seal to allow oil to lubricate the splines. Wonder if that was done?
The halfshafts and drive members we provide are warranted against BREAKAGE, not against wear caused by 'fretting corrosion' of the spline/drive member interface. This 'fretting corrosion' is a direct result of lack of lubrication, a design fault, and is common on grease filled hubs. We therefore recommend removing the half shaft seal to allow oil to migrate along the half shaft to keep the spline lubricated.
