But yet, Jeep (Wrangler), Mercedes (G Wagen), Suzuki (Jimny), and Ford (New Bronco) all seem capable of producing vehicles that meet 21st century construction regulations, whilst still retaining their classic design lineage

Those four are good examples, because each one of them is as far away from an authentic utility vehicle as it’s possible to get.

The Wrangler is just a leisure toy that only Americans would buy (and 1* NCAP isn’t really cutting it in the 21st Century), the Jimny (as likeable as it may be) is of no real use for anything at all. The Bronco is another marketing-led pastiche - literally a T6 Ranger in a frock with some camp accessories, whilst the W463A G Class is possibly the most cynical new car you can buy - a car which will never, ever go off-road, will never be available in commercial or utility form, but is compromised by the sort of underpinnings you’d expect in a £25k pickup, all in an attempt to give it the credibility it will never have.

I agree with you Philip. None of those could be considered as authentic utility vehicles. My point was that they have all managed to evolve through various model updates whilst retaining their iconic outlines. JLR chose not to do this with new Defender and in my opinion missed a big opportunity. I can live with that. I just won't be buying one.

DSL, before you ask........The stubby stalk thing to the right of it - that’s the camera washer jet! I’ve never known mine to work though as the camera lense is supposed to be sensitive to the amount of dirt on it and trigger a cleaning cycle when needed.......... and the lense gets pretty filthy at this time of the year!

Just found out that you can initiate lens cleaning by engaging reverse and pressing the button to wash the rear screen - it washes the camera lense at the same time as the window. Here’s a video I made just now
Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

LR sold 20,000 defenders last year

Where does that figure come from?

We all live the old defender but it barely managed 15k/year even at peak 'nostalgia' right before the end...

Old defender sales figures:
2011 - 18,438
2012 - 19,736
2013 - 16,199
2014 - 17,137
2015 - 19,019
2016 - 22,504

For the reporting period Q3 2021 - which is how LR want to report sales now the Defender was actually 4th, behind Disco Sport, Evoque and RRS Sport.

Cheshire110 wrote:
Only worry for LR is perhaps that defender might be stealing sales from the Disco 5...

That's not an inconsiderable worry...

Up to Dec 2019 D5 sales were averaging 3,745 per month, from January 2020 they have been averaging 1,904.

In the quarter the new Defender started sales the average was 1,480 per month.

Seems to me that making a niche, low volume, low margin 4x4 probably wasn’t the most sensible option for LR.

Looking at JLR as a whole then these models have been averaging:

XJ - 12,187
I Pace - 13,618
F Type - 6,773

Wondering what the business case for keeping these was, especially the halo F Type, that couldn't be made for the old Defender.

Only they call it an AWD now...

You appear to blow a rather large hole in this:

The old Defender was a complete anachronism and there was no way on earth anything other than an entirely new car was feasible.

when you make reference to this:

Talking of vanity projects - what would you call JLR's project to increase production to 1 million vehicles per annum? I believe some in JLR called it Project Icarus Rolling with laughter

I do cringe at the thought of how long will it be before we start seeing the new Defenders being sold for less money than the old defender? Back of an envelope modelling of current residuals it’s about 3 years we will see a 3 year old defender worth less than a 13 year old defender, especially if residuals for the old model remain. Big Cry Big Cry

I think even on JLR's official used vehicle platform there are examples of old Defenders with asking prices above new Defenders...

@mse, SA & Gareth, many thanks, esp for the vid. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I kind of thought the Clearview camera would act as a reversing camera rather than a second one. Embarassed

Can someone explain the Tax and Speed comments about buying the HT?

The road tax/VED is £265/yr, incl first tax. But as it’s a commercial and over a certain weight it’s speed limit is 50mph on single carriage way roads, 60 on d/cways and 70 on Mways.

So whats the price delta for that extra 10mph on a 90 rather than a 90HT?

For me the difference would be £4 - £5k, depending on boxes ticked. For that saving I’d quite happily stick the CC on at 50mph and be a one man traffic jam up & down the A9. Laughing Laughing I’d be more concerned about getting my Oztent in there, though it could ride on top. Confused

And re resale price difference, I usually keep car for 10 years so added depreciation on a HT wouldn’t be an issue. I kept my D3 for 13 years, may she Rust in Pieces. Thumbs Up

Plus £1,800 first year tax. That’s only £265.

You would be surprised how much it has kept the DNA - i find it impressive getting in it and it seeming like a defender.

It absolutely is the defender in a modern dress Mike

Clear view camera is in the mirror rather than for reversing in the screen

Yes its on all of them...im not sure how good it is TBH, the defender has kept clean but the disco that keeps dirty more often (but then i dont clean the rear screen as often) Mike
