Giving Defenders a bad name...

"Shot in the village of Congresbury, North Somerset by road.cc reader Nick, there's no oncoming traffic, road furniture or parked cars to contend with, but nonetheless the motorist overtakes the cyclist with just inches to spare."

no excuse, friend of mine did 6 weeks in hospital after some idiot tourist clipped him with a caravan and drove off despite witnesses. - currently on a suspended sentence.

another good friend who was a great asset to Keswick died in 2018 after being clipped - again witnesses and prison sentence.

I've been clipped before riding in Keswick but was fairly lucky.

I've stopped riding my horses on the road for idiots overtaking at speed, too close or blowing their horns (or all three at the same time). They have to settle for schooling in the arena or going out competing when lockdown permits.

I do ride a bike most days on the road and so far have been lucky but have had many close shaves. Despite LED flashing lights front and rear and high viz they still come too close at speed. We now always ride two abreast otherwise cars will insist on overtaking with a car coming from the opposite direction squeezing you into the kerb.

The same goes for pedestrians walking on country roads without a footpath with many drivers not slowing down or passing too close.

A simple rule whether its horses, cyclists or pedestrians - PASS WIDE AND SLOW Defender 90XS SW

Ive had my mountain bike bars clipped by wing mirrors and that is scary enough.

Also i was knocked to the ground crossing a local roundabout when someone did not stop and clipped my front wheel. Thankfully no damage to me or the bike.

I am more than happy to hold up the traffic behind me if there is a cyclist in front of me, i also make a point of indicating before passing and leaving as wide a gap as possible in the hope that others behind will do the same.

Some of the national press does not help at present buts that another discussion.....

Thanks for the post Supercat.....always be the better person when out on the road or trails.

There is no excuse for passing too close in that video - but as a keen, regular cyclist myself, it didn't feel that it was *that* close in the video? Maybe I've just got used to the space some road users give me.

Its when people start to pull out from the junctions on the left when I panic, just as I'm going past the junction. 2005 Td5 90 XS

A friend of mine was convicted of careless driving on the evidence of a cyclists head camera, so best not to cut up anyone.

However, have to say whilst it looked unnecessary to be that close, it's difficult to judge how close it was. James

Isn't that the point ~ there was no oncoming traffic, so the Defender could have (should have) made a real effort to leave a gap wide enough that there could be no doubt.

I am constantly amazed by what most drivers consider a safe distance is from a cyclist
ie nowhere near enough

We all have to share our highways they are not just for cars and many are stupidly busy even during lockdown...

This is not an excuse but for every bad car driver there is an equally bad cyclist, not only do I drive and cycle, i’m a blood bike fleet manager riding hi vis motorbikes most days that look similar to Police bikes, it’ astounds me how some people have ever passed their test.

Is it time for cyclists to take a basic test or at very least know how to make themselves more visible before they can use the highway. (Even the use of lights seems not important for many)

I’m I missing something, can you now buy your full licence off e-bay? Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

My daughter and my sis in law have recently passed their tests and I was horrified to learn that they don't teach you to have a look over your shoulder when overtaking now, which i find ridiculous as not all cars are fitted with "blindspot" mirrors.

To improve on your road skill and get a greater understanding about gaining advantages from actual information presented to you, I would strongly recommend an IAM or Rospa driving/riding course.

Also, a great book used by the Police is “Road Craft” leaves the DVSA test seriously wanting.... Ride like you stole it!!

Next time she's back up from nursing at GOSH, and if able I will book her onto a course if she's going to drive the TD5.
Thanks for the tip Thumbs Up

One of the lads at work had to do a online course, as he was busted by a cam footage off a cyclist. The cyclist reported him to the police for not giving him enough room.
No excuse for going to close to cyclists, I know some are a right pain in the arse, one i saw last week, not wearing any hi vis at all going for it on a poor lit road. That was asking for trouble, all it would take someone not to see him and that would have been game over for the pair.
So we all got to watch out for each other Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
