Outputshaft
HI,

Just had to replace a transfer box and gearbox on a 2.2 Puma Defender.

The outputs shaft was completely knackered and the transfer box wasn't far behind.

Purchased a rebuilt gearbox and transfer box.

Struggled to get the transfer box to mate to the gearbox and after much pushing and pulling realised that both the transfer box and gearbox had dowels in! Removed the dowel from the gearbox and all good.

My question is...One of the times i had to pull the transfer box to see why it wasn't mating the outputs shaft came off with the transfer box. I put it back in to the gearbox with the grease seal and the plastic retaining cowl. I then started to think was there any ring or retention clip that holds the shaft into the female part of the gearbox?...I hope not.

Thanks

Yes, there is, and one common cause for premature failure of the splined coupling is the internal retaining ring not being engaged correctly. If you don't rectify this it will fail prematurely sure as night follows day. Big Cry

Thanks for the info.

I have just seen it on a pmts diagram and its a snap ring.

I am pretty sure the recon gearbox didn't come with it in place so as the old one is here hopefully i can just have it off the old box...if its not damaged.
