Had an issue with this feature this evening. I’m not sure if it was me doing something wrong, or what.
Was reversing out of a driveway into a fairly busy road. It was dark and the view along the road to my left was obscured by a protruding hedge. I needed to creep back a couple of feet with left lock on to get a view. This triggered the rear traffic warning and braking. The Defender stopped abruptly by itself. This also triggered the brake HOLD feature. So I still can’t see clearly, and need to creep back a few more inches. The only way to get the car to move is to press the throttle, which produces a slight lurch backwards into the traffic, resulting in the collision braking applying again and I’ve now got a good grip on the seat with both buttocks! Eventually a car stopped to let me out. It’s highlighted two issues to me. The hold feature is ok most of the time, but prevents smooth manoeuvres by allowing the car to creep with foot on the brake to control. The rear monitor and braking is a great feature when your not expecting a car to come along, but when you have to manoeuvre backwards on the a road you know is busy, and your effectively having to push your way out, it won’t allow that. So, the answer would be to turn them off first. The only way I know to do this is in the settings>vehicle> driver assistance menus. A bit of a pain but now I know, next time I’ll do it before reversing! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy 1968 S2a 88 aka Bob 2014 Jaaaag F Type 3.0 Supercharged. |

I live on a fairly busy road and have no choice but to back out. Reversing in is not an option in a vehicle as small as the defender. It doesn't have the sheer mass to prevent people from doing something stupid. Yes, there should be more courtesy but people simply don't have that courtesy where I currently live, it is what is
Back to the story: Typically there's a short window where its safe to back out but you need to be able to go NOW. I attempted to back out one morning shortly after purchasing and rear traffic safety nanny saw traffic in the OTHER lane and stopped me dead halfway into my lane. This was amazingly unsafe and put me in serious danger. Eventually I got going but other drivers were seriously peeved and I was not happy with the defender at all. I quickly found out where to turn the nanny OFF. I left the front one on, but the reverse nanny had to go. Just for reference the defender is a pretty small vehicle for me. I own a small residential renovating company and my daily driver is a Ford F350, a full sized American truck that is substantially larger than the defender. I can back the F350 in and out of that driveway with zero issues. Now that the defenders backup nanny has been exorcised its a lot easier to drive |

ON my Kodiaq - I am fairly sure the auto brake functions are disabled if the seat belt is not plugged in - maybe see if its the same logic?
Still waiting my Defender - so cant help further. |

Another question, is the rear traffic warning/slam the brakes on a feature from Land Rover or a modern safety requirement. 130's have feeling's as well you know

I am fully aware of that. It’s not a perfect world. @SN - it wasn’t my drive! It was on Stockport Road in Marple at rush hour. You know the one! I don’t often have to reverse out into traffic, so I now know if I’m confronted with a situation similar, I will turn it off. Most of the time, my wife will be driving the Defner. So I worry that she would have not handled this situation well. I also know she drives into parking spaces forwards, so reverse nanny might be useful in that scenario. I’ll leave it switched on, but be prepared to turn it off when needed. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy 1968 S2a 88 aka Bob 2014 Jaaaag F Type 3.0 Supercharged. |

Rules may have changed for 2020 model year, but the rear side collision avoidance warning system on my 19 model year Wrangler doesn't apply the brakes. Just a visual warning in the wing mirrors accompanied by a warning bleep from the dash. |

I’ve had it trigger in Sainsbury’s car park with pedestrians pushing trolleys along a line of parked cars who I couldn’t see from the driver’s seat because of high top commercial vans parked in the slots near me. LR have had the system on their newer cars for a couple of years now but usually as part of an option pack rather than standard kit. It’s another interference device to get Euro NCAP safety brownie points. No doubt it will save some accidents. I mean, if I had just reversed out into the road regardless it would have stopped me doing it.
I am just pointing out the fact that in a certain situation it takes over without warning and can leave you with a half executed manoeuvre, and a car that’s stood with its brakes on waiting for you to press the throttle. My natural reflex is to release the brake and let the car creep. This is after driving automatic Discovery cars for 25 years. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy 1968 S2a 88 aka Bob 2014 Jaaaag F Type 3.0 Supercharged. |

@Andrew, it appears from the I-guide that there are two systems here. Rear traffic warning, and Rear traffic braking. Whether they are separate, or if you have one you have the other I’m not sure. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Also, I-guide confirms that the brake hold system won’t work with seatbelt unbuckled. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

IIRC seat belt law doesn’t require a seat belt to be worn when reversing so that may be why it won’t work when no seat belt is used.
