Did he buy that or is it a long term test vehicle from the manufacturer?

X5 is loaned, RR is an old 3.6 TDV8.

Amazing to think that after all the years and technology regarding the engine (LRO real world test with the diesel) that MPG hasn’t advanced that much from the TDI models.

Mind you if I got 17 mpg out of my V8 110 then I was probably going down hill, out of gear with the wind behind me, so in that respect ...... Whistle

Anyone else noticed with these ‘real’ world tests that no one (that I have seen and happy to be corrected) has taken it around a multi story car park and tried to park it next to a support pillar with the lunch box attached. Not to mention the height

When the wife had a D3 we had to check the councils website regarding parking restrictions as even in access height some car parks, or barriers are too low....and even then it does not guarantee that you can get out of the vehicle when parked.

I mentioned in another thread a while back it took me three attempts in a Godalming car park. Not to park, but to be able to open the door of her Velar once in the space.

Can anyone offer their experience, Surrey county council seems to think that we are still driving Morris Minors, not they are are making much money from their every increasing parking charges these days.....

What's the "off road pack" he mentions? Can't find that option.

I thought the Defender came with the plastic floor/rubber mats as standard, and carpet mats were an option?

EDIT: Found it. It's not an accessory pack, just an option. And I'm correct, the rubber floor is standard.

True ~ although the opposite view would be to look at all the emissions kit that now strangles a modern engine and wonder how they have managed to do it without seriously reducing the mpg.

Surrey County Council are not on their own. In fact EVERYONE except Costco are the same, I've had 20 years of fat boys (since my last Vauxhall Vectra company car) and it infuriates me! Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I’m sure he said on one of his videos about his Project 8 that he doesn’t have any commercial ties to JLR anymore. He consulted on the Project 7, but I think that was it. He does love JLR products, but then again so do most of us on this forum so if we were to film a review of the new defender would we be acting any different? JLR didn’t give him the car and a bunch of cash to say it was good - there are strict rules about paid promotions on social media which need to be followed and this wasn’t a paid promotion. Subconsciously biased? Maybe. But not intentionally for commercial reward.

The Defenders flooring is all rubber but comes with carpet mats, unlike most cars that have carpet flooring on which we put rubber mats Laughing 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

I like Harry’s stuff; both his car and farm videos. Normally very informative with little hint of any bias.

I think this has a very different tone/approach compared to his other reviews, revealing a potential agenda. As has been noted, he was/is a consultant for JLR.

None of what follows is meant to suggest that the new defender is anything other than a great car (albeit it isn’t a replacement defender and I think now competes with the disco, Rrs and rr as has been discussed/debated at significant length elsewhere on this form).

In no particular order, some of the things that, to me, suggested this was much more of a promotion than his typical reviews:

- what’s the point of stuffing hay bales, logs, wheels in the back - you can do that in many LR and other makes. It’s a JLR loan car which most owners are going to use very differently to what Harry seeks to demonstrate with this car

- what's the point of hooning around on a field at a silly speed with no TR on - most joy riders can do that in a clapped out banger

- why does he witter on waxing lyrical about the hybrid engine tech as though it’s the latest cutting edge in motoring, don’t many other cars already have this

- his argument as to why, as some others have suggested, that this isn’t a Disco 5 is nuanced at best

- his thoughts on the most outstanding feature was it’s road manners, yeah OK Harry but how is that different to the Disco, RRs, RR, velar ...

- what relevance a slow motion sequence of the car taking a corner has is beyond me. He’s never used that sort of shot before

- likewise, why do we need professionally staged (and lit) photographs of logs stacked in the boot or a family sledging (hmmm, selling a lifestyle perhaps)

- what’s the nonsense of dealers wanting to hide the wading depth of the old defender, really, that didn’t even crop up in conversation when I bought mine new

- on the topic of wading, the new defender is not the “king” of wading, it is simply now equal to other latest LR products

I could go on. Suffice to say, I think he let himself down a little on this one.
