Fitting Replacement Mud Flap Brackets
Hello, Very Happy

I have bought some stainless steel mud flap brackets for puma 90 and am just looking for some advice about removing old brackets with rusted bolts, and for some tips about fitting new ones. What fixings do I use to attach the brackets? And what do I attach the mud flaps to the brackets with (with black heads so they bend in)?

All Front and rear brackets on 90s fit with rivnuts. The chances are that the rivnut would spin with the bolt. If that happens, on the front there is a chance that you grip it with a small mole grip plier. The rear on a 90 is harder to get to, so probably the only option is an angle grinder to the head of the bolt. Once the brackets are off, you can try to gring what remains of the bolt flush with the chassis, and then nock the rivnut in.

The rear on 110 are hanging differently, partly hanging to the body.

The way I mounted the mudflaps (the rubber part) to their brackets were by using stainless steel carriage bolts (slightly modified - I turned the square section beneath the head round, and turned the head smaller to be exact size of the original rivet). I think they were M5 but could have been M6, not sure anymore. Forgot the length.. but around 12mm. The original are aluminum rivets, and were unpainted. So I left mine unpainted too. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

When I did my fronts (rears are different on a 110), I used some M6 stainless nuts and bolts. I also made some spacers from some offcuts of rubber matting to fit between the flaps and the brackets for each bolt position to create a gap. This is because I discovered a huge build up of crud between the two when I separated the originals.

As for black fixings, that's a matter of choice. As mentioned above, the originals are aluminium rivets so nothing particularly special and whatever you put there will be grit blasted in no time unless you also fit Gwyn Lewis guards. Darren

Admit I'm being over the top on this one , but is it possible to get hold of stainless steel ( or galvanised ) rear brackets with the oe style raised profile section. All the Stainless ones I have seen are flat profile. I want SS but I want my vehicle to look as it did when new.

Fitted SS front brackets but no issue as oe are just flat. Used YRM which are great . Holes to attach flaps are square cut to fit the included coachbolts . Had the brackets powder coated locally.

Do all Defenders have these rear raised profile brackets or is it just Pumas? I notice Land Rover do a genuine part MUC3987 which is powder coated mild steel with a flat profile? Seems that the only source of the raised profile design is OE but these are mild steel and come with flaps attached.

When I last refitted my rear mud flaps (90) I made a hole in them to match the drain hole in the cross member that the bracket covers over. Use a step drill bit.

I also added some self adhesive neoprene (eBay) to the bracket so that there is no metal to metal contact and take away a cap where crud can collect.

I guess you need a photo with the flaps removed? Just fitted mine , should have taken a shot . Hopefully somebody will have a truck with them removed. If not PM me and I'll sort something out - just getting a bit cold and damp !!

Fitting the front brackets I had to drill the bolts out...


I had never heard of a nut riveter but it worked a treat just drill a new hole, insert these and it creates a threaded recess to attach a new bolt.

only bought a cheap one similar to this

I still have the rear ones to do, I Have new stainless plinths so will attack them one day.

I found the originals on the rear eventually rot out or you end up running over them reversing off road. Its not a great design. I opted for this bracket which bolts to the rear crossmember which lifts the flap up and back. It also makes it very very easy to replace them as it doesnt rely on the rivnuts at all. I think they were from bear 4x4 or something like that, it was a while ago.

Just wondered why you had to drill new holes. I drilled my fronts out and just put new rivnuts into the existing holes.
