Hello folks,
Can anybody confirm the size of the bolts that secure cables to the standard battery positive terminal, please? I'm pretty sure that they're M6 but have a nagging doubt that they might be M8 ![]() Many thanks ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? The easiest way to check a bolt size if you can access to the bolt head or nut is to see what socket / spanner fits it. I.e an m6 bolt head / nut will be a 10mm socket / spanner and an M8 will be a 13mm socket / spanner. You get a rare one off bolt that has a larger or smaller head but the vast majority of nuts and bolts follow the standard metric sizes, tables of which can be found on the web.
Now I know all the posters on this thread know the above, so just highlighting for others that may not. And guessing that on a cold wet winters day, like me, LRA would rather ask the question on here than start pulling the truck apart to see what socket fits ![]() |

Hi Ian,
You're right about not wanting to go diving under the seat box! Unfortunately though, LR have a habit of using odd sized bolts. e.g. M8 thread but with a 10mm head for instance, so it's not always clear cut ![]() 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? LRA, I’m assuming you are looking to connect leads for an Anderson connection or CTEK connection outside the battery box. I’m contemplating the same for trickle charging etc so are you thinking of connecting the positive to one of the two bolts and perhaps doing the bolt mod on the earth clamp so you have a longer bolt on the earth clamp (so it can be tightened down correctly) then the additional ring connector for the new cable placed on top and a second nut to clamp that down ? If so then you could do the same clamp bolt mod on the positive terminal.
These are options running through my mind at present, so people’s views on those options would help in my deliberations. |

You can clearly see from the caliper photo, that's an M8 bolt with a 10mm AF hex head above the flange.

Yeah, it's an Anderson connector I'm planning for. I've already fitted a longer bolt to the earth terminal to allow a second battery connection and there's capacity there for another ring terminal. I want to use the supplied bolts on the positive terminal though, as I don't want to mess up the fitting of the rubber boot. Sadly this rule-of-thumb falls flat on its face when LR in their wisdom use flange head fasteners, which is something they do a great deal. A flange head fastener generally has an AF size one standard size smaller than a conventional hex head fastener of a standard size, so in this case an M8 thread fastener, which would normally have a 13mm AF head, has a 10mm AF head (10mm being the next "standard" size down from 13mm, of course). You will also find a lot of fasteners on modern Landrovers (and on other vehicles, especially Jap ones) that are non-preferred sizes, which is a major pain in the whatnot. For example, there are several metric thread fasteners on a Defender with a 12mm AF head instead of a 13mm AF head. On Defenders we have the additional thrill of still having Unified and British Standard thread forms. Your front axle, for example, has a bizarre combination of metric standard, UNF and BSF threads, all of which require different size spanners! |

I used to have an old Peugeot that was littered with 5 sided bolt heads. That was an utter pain in the wheel nuts I can tell you!

Further compounded when the fitting involves a nut and bolt & the bolt head is a different size to the nut ![]() Chris |

Now that bit of info interests me. Wondering whether this is a potential for reasonably priced security fasteners ![]() ![]() |
