"The new, three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with proper off-roaders and a long list of midsize SUVs. Here's how it stacks up with the best of the bunch."

Judging from the sales figures, it would not seem to be a factor for US buyers:

I know—which is quite insane. American buyers seem to ignore obvious safety issues, which in turn allows companies to continue to churn out crappy pieces of junk that could and should be built to much higher safety standards. I think people just find it easier to remain in denial when it comes to risks of accidents except for a small minority of buyers who end up spending more to get European levels of safety.

Kind of ironic that the last original Defenders sold in the US had to have external roll cages and the rest of the world had to put up with a vehicle that can be flattened at the waist in the event of a roll over....

In the USA you don‘t need safety features, you need a lawyer.

Well it seems there's an update on this question:
![]() https://jalopnik.com/kia-vastly-underestim...1844293702 Is this competition for the Defender in the US? Seems they can't make enough of them, planned to make 60,000 per annum, ramped production to over 100,000 and demand is still high. ![]() Click image to enlarge The 2021 Kia Telluride Killed the 2021 Land Rover Defender on Consumer Reports "The old guard is falling. Luxury marques that were once the envy of the car world are getting slammed by Consumer Reports, while the more middling, economy brands are taking the mantle of comfort, reliability, and modernity. Brands like Hyundai, Ford, Kia, and many others make cars that are more reliable, affordable, and all-around better than the BMW, Mercedes, and Audi counterparts. Look at the 2021 Kia Telluride versus the 2021 Land Rover Defender. There is a clear winner here." The 2021 Land Rover Defender is awesome but the 2021 Kia Telluride is better Make no mistake; the new Defender is very cool. If coolness were the only metric, the Kia Telluride would be nowhere to be found. Alas, vehicles need to be more than just cool. Consumer Reports is the king of shooting it straight. If you base your buying on their black-and-white assessment, then the Kia Telluride is not only better than the Defender, but it is not even kind of, sort of, a little bit close. CR gave the Kia Telluride an astounding 97/100. That isn’t a good score; it’s great. The 2021 Telluride has it all; dependability, reliability, a smooth ride, comfort, a well-equipped cabin, and fuel-efficient. Meanwhile, the 2021 Land Rover Defender is one of the cooler SUVs to come in a long while; it scored a 45/100. There are a few reasons for the low score; most of them are because its off-road readiness makes for a less nimble and luxurious ride. However, the real killer is the predicted reliability rating being a one out of five. https://www.motorbiscuit.com/best-midsize-...s-a-whole/ |

Does Kia also give it their 7 year warranty in the States that they give here? Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

This Kia is really really ugly. If it hadn't the Kia badge I first thought it was a Cadillac (same ugliness).
As for the CR they do compare 2 different cars here: the KIA is more like the latest Ford Explorer: very luxury highway cars with some 4x4 capabilities. The Defender was build with 4x4 in mind and some luxury. And it got 5 stars in the NCAP test which has been adapted in 2020 to be more realistic. 22MY Defender 110 (actual) | 10MY Freelander 2 (history) | 15MY Discovery Sport HSE (history) |

Cyber husky ~ the answer to your question was in the linked article :
"Why compare the Defender and Telluride? Well, they have one major overlap; they are both liars. Not bad, but they are lying a bit, at least the people who buy them are. Of course, the Defender is riding on the laurels of its history as a tough off-roader. The Defender is tough and great off-road, but most of us understand only off-road the majority of them will ever see is cutting over the grass in the Starbucks Parking lot. The Telluride similarly tries to make its owners feel like they will go off-road. The Telluride has a goofy electronic diff that “locks” until it feels “too much” pressure and will let go. That doesn’t sound like any locking diff I’ve ever heard of. The point isn’t to take either of them off-road (at least for most customers) it’s to make them feel like they can whenever they want. This is why the Kia Slaughters the Defender. Both are going to spend most of their lives on the pavement, and there is no comparison in that arena." |

Crikey, that is hideous! But then so IMO is the new Defender, so I suppose they might be competition for each other. |

Very much styled for the US market. Have a look through these and you'll see the similarities: https://autonxt.net/best-selling-suvs-in-america/ WARNING.

@Zed
It's true these SUV look all the same: the only 2 perhaps 3 I like formwise are the New Ford Bronco, the Jeep Wrangler and perhaps the Ford Explorer (the old form was mcuh better) 22MY Defender 110 (actual) | 10MY Freelander 2 (history) | 15MY Discovery Sport HSE (history) |

That's make pretty interesting viewing. ![]() The Telluride would just be off that list at 21,854 for the quarter. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is in 7th position with 55,198. New Defender is 4,913. |
