I had this on my Velar - in the app you could set a temperature and it'd start the engine and get the cabin warm. Is that standard on the Defender or is it an option? Does the Defender also have the tracker?

As far as I know it’s standard on diesel powered Defenders but not sure about the petrols but I believe the remote start is so it will do the same job.

Tracker as far as I know is optional - you have to tick the right box to get one. The first First Edition I was offered from Dealer Stock had no security system at all which was why I didn’t buy it even though my area is not a car theft hotspot I do travel around the country and as far as London when we are permitted! The reason that I was given for making the tracker/ security optional was too many insurance companies, especially in England, demand something other than the system that LR was building in and some even request that you fit a specific make/ model (usually from a company that that insurance company owns........). I’m with NFU Mutual and for my area they weren’t concerned about whether or not the car had a tracker but didn’t offer any discount for having one, same as they aren’t concerned about the car being garaged or kept on the drive. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

First edition has Alarm, Immobiliser etc as standard but the in control secure tracker is an interesting one, from what i can tell its all fitted as its part of the system...so i think the option is just the subscription - which makes me wonder if it could be added (not that the dealer or anyone would know how to retrofit regardless whether its possible) Mike

Be careful here. It caught me out. Insurance companies are getting picky, including Land Rovers own insurance.

There is secure tracker, and secure tracker pro. Secure tracker pro is Thatcham cat5, Secure tracker is cat6.

Cat 5 is more secure than Cat 6. Cat 5 needs a separate fob to be in the vehicle when it’s drive, or the tracker activates and alerts the monitor. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Also, it’s factory order, so the dealer can’t do anything to change it once it’s built. I had to have a Trackstar cat 5 fitted. The dealer paid
50% because they didn’t advise me that it might be desirable on a £70k + car. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Im still not sure if anything different is installed in the car or as i suspect its just a subscription, in which case any of us could add it now Mike

There is an additional Tag (in key?) for the Pro Part - so a reader in the car too (But that may be there)...

I think ST pro has a different key system to cars with ST.

I argued strongly for mine to be upgraded to the STP after encountering insurance issues. It was not possible. I ended up with a Trackstar system which does involve an extra fob that must be in the vehicle when it’s driven.

I think the STP is aimed to counter people trying to steal by cloning a key. Mine is more secure I think, so long as I don’t keep the tag on the same key ring as the car. It’s a bit inconvenient, but it works. I nipped out yesterday and forgot the tag. Within a minute of leaving my drive, I was phoned by Trackstar. Automated service and had to identify myself, and state that I was in the car or knew where it was. Failure to answer would result in emergency contact to police. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Surely JLR should not be selling vehicles that are unable to be insured? I mean if it needs the top spec tracker then it should be standard not an option. What good is a brand new car that is uninsurable?!...heads should roll whoever let this slip by imo

It’s the insurance companies issue regarding insurance, not JLR. All depends where you live. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

JLR have changed their vehicle Configurator so that once you get over a certain value (£75k), you get a pop up message that advises you:

I don’t see the fascination with trackers by insurance companies as having one fitted doesn’t prevent the vehicle from being stolen in the first place. Surely it’s better to have additional security which prevents the theft in the first place, (for example a disk lock or a ghost immobiliser) than it is to have a tracker fitted?!

I’m not convinced myself that if my vehicle was stolen in the middle of the night, that a professional thief wouldn’t have either found and removed the tracker or blocked the signal before the police actually got around to looking for the vehicle. By that time the vehicle is long gone hence my thoughts on preventing theft in the first place. But insurance companies seem to have a preference with trackers over anything else at the moment....
