Didn’t go mad on the configurator? You added £24k! At what point would you accept that adding extras becomes mad?!

I stopped at £7K - could EASILY have doubled that with stuff I would have had if money were no object (no Domestic CFO veto ) - as far as the socket, even SWMBO's six year old Mokka has one in the back FFS Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

One problem with adding loads of options to an S or an SE is that you soon get into the price range of a First Edition or X Dynamic SE that has some of them as standard kit. My 1st Edition only needed mudflaps, front protection plate and spare wheel cover ( that I have never fitted ) added as options as it had most things I wanted as standard. I really wanted the rear diff but the dealers only had one FE with that option in their group stock but it didn’t have any security system at all. I’ve since added roof rails and cross bars, PPF and ceramic paint sealer and Duratrac tyres which in total brought the price up to just short of £63k, so £4K in add ons have gone onto the car in total.
Even on the FE I have some kit I haven’t used like the clear view rear view mirror and the configurable TR2 Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

You're not at all wrong, Tim! I'm speccing a base-model Stateside, and it's well into SE territory. The only plus is I can pick JUST the options I want, and get some of the ones I DON'T want from that done.
Of course, I'm in bloody optionitis, and keep adding stuff. The bank manager might be by for a swift word of counsel at this rate. |

For my needs the S has everything without options, most of my option costs are for metallic paint and white roof, only other options are privacy glass, premium LED headlights, meridian sound system, off road tyres and white interior crossbeam, none of which I really need. Comes to £4K I think. Mud flaps will be added along with seat covers and possibly side steps. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Expat I’m also an optionist but got it wrong with my Mini Countryman and specced one very expensive option that I never used once............. my Countryman was the PHEV and I didn’t appreciate before buying it that I could set a timer to switch on the electric powered heating (or cooling in hot places) if the car was plugged into it’s charging socket, using mains domestic electricity to preheat the interior which didn’t just thaw out the front screen but cleared the panoramic roof, all the side glass and the rear screen - £400 spent and never used! With the Defender it helped that I took a car from dealership stock and didn’t factory order so I could only add stuff from the dealer fit extras.
For sure if I was ordering now and doing a factory order I would only add the rear diff, even though so far I haven’t found it necessary offroad in this car. The first Evoque I had had every option on the lists except the smokers pack and I opted for a full size spare that I never used! My Velar has a lot of toys but never use them, there’s menus on the infotainment that I’ve never looked in. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Ha!! My Evoque is a base model pure, and the only option is the cold weather pack. I added roof rails and a tow hitch for utility. Nothing else On the Defender I’ve a fair wedge of vanity options. Also the E-diff and towing package, because I need to tow the race bike to the track. The rest ... man. This is not the crew to talk me off this ledge, but I keep cars 7+ years usually so might just get what I want. Might as well!! |

Keeping longer was also on my plans as I retired this year so don’t have the funds coming in now that I used to so I bought the car outright. BUT I also have a 1996 Defender 90 and now I’m wondering if once the new one’s warranty runs out I should sell it for a small BEV run about/ shopping car and keep the 1996 one as a classic car that only does around 1000 miles a year up to this year and now it’s not even done 200 miles in the last 6 months...... I’m pretty sure they all come with the standard alarm and 3-year Secure Tracker subscription. Mine is as basic as they come (with a few options) and it definitely had an alarm & tracker as I’ve set it off and they call you up! |

I wondered is the secure tracker a physical thing or just paying an effective subscription...considering all the bits are on the car already...I know the dealer will not be helpful on this! Mike
