Puma 2.2 Electrical Header Location
Hi,

I've recently experienced an electrical fault with my Puma 2.2, which has caused the instrument cluster, headlights and heated rear windscreen to stop working. I've checked the fuse, earth etc and tested at various points in the circuit, and have narrowed the fault down to the stretch of cable (or its terminations) between fuse 4P and the header that it supplies. However, the cable from fuse 4P disappears into the loom up behind the dash, and I have no idea where exactly the suspect header is located! I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on the location of the header shown in the attached diagram?

Any info at all would be much appreciated!!

Can I also ask, is there a way that I can find out locations of electrical components from the wiring diagrams/workshop manual etc. I seem to recall that it could be done with the old "RAVE" manual on the TD5s, but I can't seem to find a way of doing it on the Puma.

Ah right, I see, thanks! I'm not sure I've got that document. I'll have to try and get hold of a copy.

When you say behind centre dash, is that behind the heater ducts too?

I thought I'd just update this thread with the strange resolution of this fault.....

Before having the whole dash out, I thought I'd check that the wire hadn't fallen off the back of the fuse box, so had a look in there with a mirror and torch, and was surprised to find that the fuse I'd been testing didn't have anything connected to it, besides an ignition switched live. I also noticed that there were several green and white wires (the colour I was looking for), and one was connected to a fuse slot with no fuse in it! I replaced the missing fuse and, to my delight, everything was back up and running!! It appears that the fuse had fallen out and completely disappeared! I've searched for the fuse and can't find it anywhere! I can only think that it fell on the floor and got knocked out the car when I got out.

The really confusing thing, and the reason that I'd been testing from the wrong fuse all along, was that there was a 5A fuse in the unconnected fuse slot, which was the fourth slot in from the end, and obviously no fuse in the slot where the fuse had (unbeknownst to me) fallen out, which was also four slots in, but from the other end. Both were also ignition switched. My car doesn't have air con, so I assumed that the empty slot was where the aircon fuse would be, and the other slot with the 5A fuse in was fuse 4P (the one that I suspected of being the faulty circuit). However, the reality was that fuse 4P was missing and the air con slot had the redundant 5A fuse in it, and both being four fuses in from opposite ends, this lead me to read the fuse box diagram upside down!!!

So, just a heads up, although it's probably common knowledge already I suspect: due to the fact that the (under-steering-wheel) fuse box is upside down, fuses can fall out (and seemingly vanish altogether)!!!

Given that the A/C fuse (F7) should be 10A, is it possible that "somebody" (gremlin / apprentice / Mr Hyde / ...) reinserted a 5A fuse, which had falled out, into the wrong slot? Whistle

You'd think that was the case, but it failed whilst I was driving, so unless there was someone hiding behind my dash trim pulling fuses, then it must have fallen out on it's own!! Very Happy

To be honest, I'm amazed that the fuses can fall out, because they're pretty tight in the holders, but I found several other fuses today that were "on their way" to falling out (and pushed them back in)! As for why there's a 5 amp in the A/C slot - my car doesn't have A/C, so I think LR just give you a spare slot for accessories and fit it with a fairly low-value fuse as standard. My car is a bit weird though, as although it's just a "station wagon", it was one of the last Defenders to be produced, and as such it seems it was "destined" to be an XS, and it appears to have an XS-spec interior wiring loom.

Sorry, just re-read your post and realised I got the wrong end of the stick to some extent!....Nope, nobody in my family would've reinserted it in the wrong place without me knowing, and the car hasn't been in to any garages or anything, so it is a mystery as to where the missing fuse went!

It is a reasonably well-known problem on the Puma for fuses to fall out of the under-dash fuse box, due its generally poor quality and inverted orientation. When my vehicle left tha factory there was a generous application of an adhesive tape similar to Sellotape across all the fuses to h9old them in, but I don't know if this was a normal factory build procedure or maybe a dealer PDI customisation. I wasn't particularly impressed, and to start with a number of circuits would stop working and I would find the fuse out if its slot and hanging on the tape.

In the end I removed all the fuses one at a time and bent the "legs" of the fuse to put a slight kink in them to make them a tight fit in the socket. Since then I've had no problems with them of any kind.

Some of the retrograde engineering on the Puma was truly astonishing.

Ah right, I did wonder if it might be a common problem!

Mine didn't come with any "special sellotape" so looks like it may have been a dealer thing.

You're certainly right about some of the "engineering" in the Defender!! I may have to try something similar to your suggestion to stop this from happening too often.
