Pulsating rear tail light
I have a pulsating / low power rear drivers side tail light but both brake lights work fine.

Bulbs are OK after switching them, switched out the male sockets too but the drivers side tail light is still low power.

I've also switched out the female socket and it's still the same. Any ideas where to look next?

It's a 2009 110 Puma

These sorts of problems are quite often due to poor earths so I'd start by cleaning and remaking those connections. Darren

Check the rear lighting ground on the RHS of the transfer box. It’s an m6 bolt or around that size and gets loose, it may not be the culprit but I’ve had it happen twice to me now.

I put a touch of loctite 222 very low strength loctite on it a drip on the threads then re-torqued. All good now.

I had it after my clutch was replaced in 2012 as it wasn’t tightened up.
Again in about 2016 as it worked loose despite being torqued correctly and again this year a few months ago.
This time I added a touch of loctite for that very reason.

When I tested the ground continuity the readings didn’t look adverse.
The giveaway was the readings were different each side though which allowed me to track it down and the reason why is there is a couple of ring terminals on there and one would have better contact that the other in a sporadic way.

When warm with expansion the lighting issue would go away.

It may not be the issue but it’s a culprit that caused the problem I had that randomly developed.

As LRA mentioned, it’s common for power to not be the issue but ground paths instead. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thanks for this! I've just had my clutch replaced and it does get better once it heats up. I'll give it a check first thing in the morning.

It’s on the RHS of the T box on the side but towards the rear part. The bolt has a flanged head to it also, the first time I looked at it. It was dirty and lose. In more recent times it simply worked loose.

If it does happen to be that just nip it up a touch to see if it cures it. If it does whip it out. Clean everything and refit with the correct torque and a tiny bit of the 222 Loctite on the threads.

Don’t use any other loctite as it’ll likely be too strong, this is a low break away thread locker for small fixings with a low strength. Thumbs Up

Thanks for this mate!

The bolt was tight, I've cleaned the corrosion from it with sand paper and the dremel, still the same however.

If I run a temporary earth directly from here to the bulb, it would tell me if it's further up the loom, right? I'm reaching at the moment!

You can use any good ground source. But yes, if it works with a temporary ground you’ll know it’s somewhere on the ground path in the existing wiring. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Do you have towing electrics? Weird rear light issues can sometimes result from corrosion within the socket, whcih might be worth a check. Darren

I'm going to get a pair of brand new bulb connectors to eliminate that first.

If it's not that it's in the loom, which is the best to have a problem

Yeah! It's an ex utility so has a few towing sockets. Will give them a check...

I've just changed both bulb holders and as expected no difference.

Therefore, it has to be a corroded wire in the loom. Perfect!

I guess it's a full strip down to find the culprit then...

Is this where the tail light switch is located by any chance?

It's a diagram of the brake light switch, but wondering if that's a point where I can begin running a live down the side of the truck to test if its a cable in the loom. I'll run a ground from it's original position too.
