Installing t&g floor
Being a bit of a chav I’ve installed a few click lock laminate floors over the years with no problems. However, my Wife is getting ideas of grandeur and want something better in the hall. We’ve seen a nice engineered wood that we like, but it’s t&g not click together.

I understand there are three ways to install this. Glue, nail, or special screws. It being laid over a chipboard sub floor. Any suggestions on what’s best and why? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Last time I did an English oak T & G floor I hired a nail gun and nailed it on the lower part of the groove pre putting the tongue into the groove, it gives an invisible joint that doesn’t move provided the substrate floor is solid. The hire company sold me lost head nails and the gas propellant cartridges on a sale or return basis.

The shoe of the nail gun is angled so you can’t get it wrong Thumbs Up

Please wear the correct eye protection and have a few practices with the nail gun first, hope this helps and your good lady enjoys your DIY skills. 2015 HT XS 90

It it ok to nail it even if I’m using an underlay? I guess it is. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

in the bedroom I have real oak floor boards straight over joists I used special screws in case I had to lift it it again, same theory but with screws, you will need a battery drill and some patience takes a bit longer than a nail gun.

found OSMO oil a brilliant coating, my floor is american oak pre treated with OSMO

in the lounge engineered oak over floor boards this floor was fitted by others they used a nail gun t in this case no underlay)

in my hall I used engineered oak parquet, that is glued down DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I’m afraid I can’t answer that as I didn’t use underlay (it was quite a few years ago) but I don’t see why you can’t but someone maybe along shortly to tell us more Thumbs Up 2015 HT XS 90

I was under the impression the nail goes through the tongue side, glad you mention doing it through the groove. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I’m almost too scared to ask what the “lover groove” is in the above posting, at least you nailed it Rolling with laughter 2015 HT XS 90

Bluest,

I've used Tongue-tite screws in the past. http://www.tite-fix.co.uk/products/tongue-tite/. You can get them at Toolstation or Screwfix nowadays.

I used them to secure down 20mm solid oak T&G flooring with a 1mm ('ish) underlay. It's been down about 10 years, hasn't moved and does creak anywhere. Easy to use and has the advantage of the heads disappearing into the top of the tongue. Near the door thresholds I used a recessed hole and filed with a plug of oak.

I drove mine at about 45 degrees so you'll need to use the correct length depending on the depth of your flooring and whether you have 18mm or 22mm chipboard flooring.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Andy

You can lay t&g as a floating floor in the same way the click systems work. Leaving a gap at the perimeter and gluing the tongues. Essential if you are doing it on an upper floor and are needing to maintain acoustic separation. Solid fixing can cause issues with movement on real wood so you are better of laying it a floating floor on an underlay.

Simples Thumbs Up

p.s. Don't use the screws, shank is too large unless you're fixing 20mm + thick boards and not engineered planks which are softwood core with a 2mm hardwood face, they will split
