I need to get a 300 TDi rebored asap. Was going to go with +20 thou but my son said why not get it rebored to 2.8l? Without any research, (YET) is it worth it, is there any real gain in power, loss in reliability? I currently run through a LT77 box but have the option of changing to a R380. Are there any gains in either options? I intend to travel and want reliability above performance but wouldn't mind gaining in fuel economy if possible. Do I want the Earth? Yes. Can I have it? It is up to you! Don't forget to forge your dragons as you smell the roses along the walk of life.

There's more to building a 2.8 than just re-boring it. They're also incredibly torquey and you'd really need to move to an R380 box for reliabilty. Darren

Were the bores measured for wear and found to be out of specifications to decide for a rebore?
I think the later LT77 were quite strong. My 1988 box is suffix E, which is not the strongest, but have a stronger reverse gear compared to suffix D! Only if I drive more backwards 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

The 2.8TGV which is what I assume you mean by boring out to 2.8 has a larger bore (ok you have that one ticked). Longer stroke crank (provides the extra torque to a certain extent) thus requires different pistons, rings, con rods, big ends, crank, bearings. The head and block if I remember correctly also have extra cooling channels (or rather they are not blocked off) but they may not be needed. There's also a different turbo if you're talking about getting a proper TGV setup. Ed
