Overlanding with the Puma
I am preparing for an overland trip here in Brazil and would like to know if anyone has already been away for a long trip with their new Puma Defender. If so, how did it go, any problems, things to look out for? My biggest concern is with the ECU. Previously, I have travelled with a 110 Tdi and I have no idea what to expect from the new electronics with the Puma. All info very welcome. 130 HCPU 2.4TDCi

That is right, but take the new model with double o-ring seals. I think at the end of the part number there is an X
I would also recommend spare UJ`s.

Good luck Puma 110" SW

Spare vacuum pump, UJ's, wheel bearing kit (though with the staked nut set up it will be a pain, but I believe they can be replaced by the old style lock nut and tab washer), air filter, spare sump plug, couple of spare wheel nuts (I've replaced my lock nuts and carry these as spares).

Going through this same list myself at present. I'm disinclined to just replace the vac pump with a new one as I've heard tails of the replacement failing. What I can't find out is if that replacement was a double sealed unit or simply stock of the same one that failed.

The other thing I'm still doing is slowly fixing up the hoses and cables under the bonnet so nothing rubs. Extend your diff and fuel breathers at the rear too. 110 2.4TDCi

Thanks for all the responses.

Looks like an extra vacuum pump is essential then. The car’s done 5,000 km and so far so good with the pump, so I’ll leave it and hope, but take along an extra just in case. I’ll check out at the dealers if the replacement here is still the old one or the new double sealed unit that MK and dm_td5 mention. Amongst other stuff, will also definitely be taking spare u-joints, wheel bearings and the whole range of filters (outside the big cities here they are not so easy to find).

Good advice about all the hoses, I checked mine out a few weeks back and already noticed some wear and tear. Nothing a couple of hours, plenty of tape and some of those little plastic tie down thingys couldn’t put right. As for extending the diff and fuel breathers, I guess the best way is to buy a kit. Any suggestions? Confused

Finally, thanks spudfan and sasha2001 for the ARO Forum tip, already had a look, lots of interesting stuff there and I will be hunting down the recommended threads.

Have a great weekend. 130 HCPU 2.4TDCi

Here in New Zealand, specialitly shop is using "some type of elbows that fit" on 2007 onwards and hose from the local shop and cables ties etc, worked fine on my td5 for 8 years!!!

I simply bought some soft flexible hose with a 6mm internal diameter, dipped into hot water to soften it more and slid it over the breather hose then cable tied it up to where I wanted. I did think of putting a membrane filter over it for the fuel tank breather but haven't as yet. 110 2.4TDCi

In the UK the vacuum pump is now a restricted part. When mine went it had to be released specially centrally before desford could ship it.

Im not sure how it works with the rest of the world - but in the UK you cant get it as a spare (easily anyway) Mike

Here in New zealand they did not have ONE in the country for a mutual friend at Christmas, so he put on a Ford one drove for his holidays for two weeks, returned to the stealers who insisted on putting on the new arrived one!!!
he said why, they looked and checked and agreed it was ok and gave him the Landrover part as a spare!!!

Thanks. Having had a look, I'll probably do something similar myself. I doubt if I could get a kit here anyway and if I could it would be ridiculously expensive. All Land Rover parts here are outrageously priced. Last time I came back to the UK, I returned here with a suitcase full of kit. Saved a fortune. 130 HCPU 2.4TDCi
