Is that the route you guys would go now? As opposed to using a version of the rover v8?

Well it wasn't the route I went down Monty.
I suspect there is not a lot in it price wise if you are 'starting from scratch' with a remanufactured Rover v8 vs the crate engine LS - but as I was starting from an original v8 Land Rover, I wanted to retain the Rover-ness at least in spirit Plus it makes fitting parts an 'off-the-shelf' affair. You get a lot more power from the LS of course, but this isn't really something I was interested in - a modestly tuned Td5 with say 150-170hp seems plenty to me - so the 240 or so I am getting from the v8 is going to be more than enough. I'm not sure how the fuel economy compares between the two. I have the impression the LS might be quite a bit better if driven in the same way? 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

Once you hear the purr of the V8 Hufflepuff, you will forget you ever thought about fuel economy.
I for one would definitely turn the radio off or remove it completely. For me, a ready made entertainment system I hope you enjoy. Always wanted a V8. In reality, I don't suppose I ever will, but it is on the lottery ticket bucket list |

Thanks guys.
My angle here, is that I currently have a standard 3.5 v8 in my 110 running SUs. It's done almost 80k miles and I debate whether when I get it out to have it re-built, if I should go to 3.9 / EFI or something else. It's hard to make sense of the various comments I can see online, but it seems people fear the head / liner issues on the large bore v8s (4.2 / 4.6), but obviously they have more bhp. Obviously there is the MS decision too. So, still slightly fantasy, but something I am considering doing currently.. |

I put a new turnkey 4.6 GEMS in my 90, I love it, don’t get me wrong.... but I should have gone down the LS route for the same money.
I’m lucky to be good mates with Dan and get to test all the conversions he does, even this evening I drove an LS converted 90. If you are swapping the v8, my advice is to go for an LS, or a Lexus v8. Obviously funds permitting. Swapping a 3.5 for a 3.9 will probably offer very little performance difference. A 4.6 Rover will be quite a leap forward, but will just about hold off a ‘hot’ td5... |

I don't think there is the right or wrong answer to your question. But here is my experience, which may gives you an insight. Around 2007/08 was looking to get single throttle bodies and stage 3 heads plus ecu for my John Eales build 5.2 Rover v8 (which was stage 2 and modified 14cux at that time, 268bhp on dyno). For pretty much half the money of this upgrade I was able to buy a brand new L98 6.2 who just hit the market as a crate engine. Disabled the DOD, VVT, upgraded oil pump. Added mechanical throttle body (100mm), different inlet, fuelrail and closed loop O2. The 5.2 ended in my 90 50th, the LS in my 100 comp car. Yes, the LS has more grunt, for sure. Would I stick with the Rover V8 when factory fitted? Absolutely. There is a reason those crate LS are priced the way they are and they are far from perfect. But generally, American hp was always easier (read cheaper) than European and once you want to run your LS hard it takes some decent modifications too. To me, the Rover V8 suits LRs much better. m |

I visited nene overland the other day for a shot in an LS and their new conversion demo vehicle which is a 5.3 ecotec V8. I didn’t really gel with the LS but I put this down to the auto box. The smaller capacity V8 was more responsive, more willing to rev and because it was a manual it was more engaging, more fun. And the vehicle as a whole still felt like a defender, whereas the LS didn’t, again I blame the auto box.
After experiencing both vehicles I definitely think a V8 conversion will be on the cards, as and when funds allow. I’ll certainly be getting in touch with Dan at DT at some point. |

Well most people don't complain when things run smoothly. If you want a good statement about how reliable the 4.6s can be - Jon (FridgeFreezer) over on LR4x4 has two of them, one is a 109 on Volvo portal axles another in a 127 ambulance camper. The break in / test drive for the 109 was to tow 3.5t out to the Ladoga Trophy in Russia from Hampshire, continue running around as support truck for the race team and then tow 3.5t back. The 127 has been all over Europe hauling it's rather large backside up and down the Alps with no issues. Get them built properly (i.e. adequate cooling etc) and they're perfectly fine. Having said all that when I was looking at engine upgrades for the 6x6 I started looking for another P38 to break for the engine. Then came across the Lexus V8 conversions and decided that was a much more sensible route for me. A slight twist has been a friend offered me a Mazda SL35Ti which should just drop into the 6x6 for a stronker of a deal so that's the route I'm taking with that. Thus the Lexus V8 is destined for the 110 - will be more enjoyable that way. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

My 4.6 although was a new build, has now done nearly 10k miles and has not missed a beat, all I’ve done is dropped the oil every 2k miles. I haven’t even swapped the plugs out! Though i will do the next time I have some time off work. It will stay in the ‘Scumbag’ 90 as originally built. The G4 will be getting the LS.
The Lexus swap is a very sensible option, I’ve driven both a standard v8 and a supercharged version, the standard will no doubt be a better option for most! |

Steve, do I recall you saying previously that DT would do a drive in drive out LS conversion with auto (presumably not while you wait ) for £15k Rob

Ahhh, Dan has since gone VAT registered, so it's a bit more expensive now, though still a spunk load cheaper than anyone else and you won't find anybody with a tidier install.
I've uploaded a video on YT, it's all about the noise really, just a road pull, but there's an overview video coming soon. |
