Impact testing methods were overhauled for 2020, with the head-on collision now consisting of two moving elements: the test vehicle itself and a Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier (MPDB).

This test not only looks at intrusion on the test vehicle but also to the MPDB which represents the partner vehicle in a collision. To avoid being penalised within the latest test protocols, large vehicles must now offer more protection – and better compatibility – to smaller vehicles during a collision.

Although they both achieved a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating, the Defender and D-Max lost points for their performance during the MPDB test and the threat they pose to partner vehicles in a collision.

The D-Max, which scored 11.2 out of 16 in the frontal impact test and 84% for overall adult occupant protection, caused some ‘localised areas of high deformation’ to the MPDB, while the Defender’s ‘high mass and front structure makes it an aggressive partner to a colliding vehicle’. It scored 11.7 out of 16 and 85% for adult occupant protection.

“The new-for-2020 tests are really driving a requirement for increased performance and more aggressive cars like the Defender and D-Max are being identified and marked down as a result,” Matthew Avery, Thatcham Research’s Director of Research, explained. “The latest test results show some manufacturers are finding compatibility a challenge.”

Volvo were doing this twenty years ago - the first XC90 was designed with an additional lower front crossmember to activate the safety systems in the other vehicle.

I would be happier if my loved ones - I have 3 young daughters that I often bus around on dad's duties - were inside that Defender. It's one of the reasons I have owned Land Rovers for the past 15+ years (RRS, Disco4), they are built like friggin' tanks but don't look or drive like one. I am relieved to see the new Defender continuing to be among the safest vehicles you can buy, despite the weight shedding - relatively speaking - and unmatched on and off-road abilities. 2020 NAS Defender 110 HSE 5-seater / Silver / Khaki / Black Pack / Black Roof / Satin Film / Cold Pack / Off-Road Pack / Advanced OR Pack / Comfort + Convenience Pack / Sirius + HD radio / HUD / Meridian Surround

Good plan. As long as your daughters only travel in the Defender and never walk, ride, take a bus or take any other form of road based transport.

^^^^ True, but let’s face it if it’s in the city the city folk hate Defenders anyway or anything that isn’t German, French, Italian, Spanish practically. It’s a stereotypical demographic that is seen time and time again.
(And in America).
The same group will say all farmers are “rolling in it” and so on and so forth.

Financial racket, that is clear to see time and time again.

It wouldn’t matter if the Puma had the best safety rating of all 4x4’s they’d still be playing the same game.
They’ll love the Fiat 500’s though...

And we all know why. Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes.

According to ANCAP, the new defender exhibited strong performance across the four key areas of safety assessment. “Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection scored well, with maximum points recorded for adult occupants in the side impact and oblique pole tests, and for child occupants in the frontal offset and side impact tests,” ANCAP Director – Communications & Advocacy, Rhianne Robson said.

Nick Rogers, Executive Director, Product Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover said: “From the moment we started creating the New Defender, we were obsessed with functional safety and the protection of both the occupants and other road users. We set out to make a vehicle that is the most capable and durable Land Rover ever made, with safety features that truly enhance the driver’s experience. But did they actually test the vehicle? The embedded video in the article is sticked up as Euro NCAP at Thatcham.

The first post in the comments section makes the confusion apparent:

"I guess Land Rover lost over $1 million worth of vehicles plus ANCAP charges for the testing. Would it be possible to use the data from UK testing and save Land Rover a packet? Maybe then they can drop the price of the vehicles a little."

Their standards are aligned with Euro NCAP, don’t suppose there’s much point crashing them twice:

“As has occurred since 1999, ANCAP will continue to publish ANCAP safety ratings based on local tests and protocols as well as tests and protocols used by Euro NCAP. Previously, the safety ratings published by ANCAP based on Euro NCAP test data were determined following a process of re-assessment by ANCAP engineers. From 2015, this re-assessment will no longer occur with ANCAP safety ratings published as provided by Euro NCAP1.
The ANCAP safety ratings published based on Euro NCAP testing will incorporate additional safety information obtained through the conduct of new and updated physical crash tests, and performance testing of SAT including:
• Electronic stability control (ESC)
• Speed assist systems (SAS)
• Lane support systems (LSS)
• Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
This broadened suite of tests will form part of ANCAP's overall test regime from 2018”

Interesting to see this story, and read past the headline to see the potential impact on previously allocated NCAP ratings based on the availability of safety systems such as e call.

BMW will discontinue 3G connectivity support next year

BMW has been at the forefront of in-car connectivity for years and that comes with a cost sometimes. Older cars use older technology and since they are still being used today, a drastic change in connectivity support will be affecting them. According to multiple forum posts found online, BMW is currently notifying owners of older models that their 3G-connected cars will no longer have support or connectivity starting with 2022.

That means that if you have an older BMW model that uses ConnectedDrive for things like traffic info or any other sort of access to the internet through various apps, you will no longer be able to use those features from February 2022 onward. It is important to note that this is not BMW’s decision whatsoever. This is happening because mobile network carriers are starting to phase out 3G antennas and support for these frequencies.

As we’re getting closer to 5G and 4G is widely spread, mobile network carriers are dropping 3G all around the country in a process also known as ‘3G sunset’. According to e-mails from BMW “The decision to phase out 3G network technology was made at the discretion of the respective cellular carriers and lies beyond the control of BMW.” The company also highlights the services that will no longer work which include BMW Assist eCall, Advanced Real‑Time Traffic Information, Remote Services and BMW Online.

BMW isn’t the only car maker facing this issue either. Since this is a problem related to the carrier, other cars and models will be affected too, from a wide range of manufacturers. BMW says that it is exploring all possibilities right now to fix the issue but no additional information has been provided as to what they are looking into exactly. One potential solution could be to upgrade the cars with 4G sim-cards but in that case the on-board hardware might not be up to par. We’ll keep you posted if we get any update on the situation."
