Is his the same tank as ours? I didn't think it was.
Anyway, I found a brass fitting that fitted the outlet and had a pipe the right dia soldered in and then a 90 deg bend so it faces the correct way and wouldn't snag on anything. 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

There’s about 20-25 litres below the height of the filler on Safari Equip arch tank which really does squeeze as much capacity out of the space available as possible if you get the version for 5 seat models without the seat belt bracing brackets. It’s a considerable loss of capacity and range if you don’t connect the balance pipe and I didn’t see the point of adding a 48 litre arch tank and then only being able to use half of it, especially since the extra large main tank already has the balance pipe threading installed.
Some tanks I’ve seen do look much different to the one fitted to mine and extend along the underside of the seat box and may have a much smaller capacity below the main filler pipe, so we might be comparing apples and pears. I was going to get a proper Pirtek balance pipe made up but never bothered - the standard arrangement worked fine with decent grade hose and makes for easy field repairs, not that I ever had to do any. And if you look at where it is, it’s considerably higher higher up and protected than brake pipes and ABS sensor wiring. I did some fairly extensive googling and could find no evidence of anyone having trouble with damaging that pipe. I covered mine in convoluted tubing to protect it from stone hits but it may also be possible to make a simple guard that utilises the anti-roll-bar fixings. Just found a thread with pictures of tanks identical to those I had fitted - about 9 posts down.
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic3428.html You can see how much capacity is below the pipe that extends towards the main tank. As an aside you can also see the larger main tank - complete with internal baffles and strengthening. The whole thread is worth reading until it diverts onto an entirely different type of tank Dave Green Goddess - 1998 Defender 110 300tdi |
