Whitbread Offroad Roll Cage.....anyone used or bought one?
Hello all,

Just looking at a roll cage for the DC. I've come across Whitbread Off-road in my travels. Has anyone used them? Ordered or have one of their roll cages?

Quite a price difference to Safety Devices (£500) and as I am not getting an internal version nor does it need to be FIA competition spec, I'm happy to look further afield. They seem to be used some Mountain Rescue teams, and in some form of competition, so I'm presuming at face value that the cages do the job.

I can’t speak about the Whitbread version, but I am sure someone else can help out.

I have the full external cage from Safety Devices for my 90 TD5 HD. I had fitted an internal / external PP cage to my previous 300 110.

The reason for choosing SD was the following when comparing to others

The cage fits closer to the body work, looks neater, keeps the height as low as possible, less likely to snag a branch between the cage and body work.

Bolt together, myself and my brother fitted on the drive in three days. Some companies charged £1500 and wanted the car for the week to fit. DIY saves that chunk of cash.

You can fit the chassis to inside body work first and use the supplied blanks to cover the holes. This means that you can fit the upper external cage at your leisure if tight for time.

Terrafirma stockists can supply the SD cage within days as it is a stocked item, I ordered mine from Kieth Gotts on a Tuesday and collected it on the Friday.

PP took four weeks and then mixed my Order with someone’s else’s so I did not have all the correct parts, I had to wait for the other person to send back their wrong parts before PP would send them to me. I assumed that they don’t keep spares on the shelf.

Some cages are welded only, I can’t do that and did not want to be without the car for a week. Again the issue I found with the welded version was that some business would not comment to how far out the cage sat from the body work.

The SD cage also does not look like an explosion of scaffold tubes with cross brancing in all directions. The cage will not save the car just slow down the rate of collapse.

I've owned one (and SD and P&P cages).

A mate had a Whitbread cage fitted and managed to use it the very next day.

Snap. We had ours done by the factory too. Great guy fitted it can't remember his name now, superb experience at the time.

My only issue is it seems they've forgotten to do up one of the nuts which attaches the front of the cage to the chassis outrigger, which was a disappointment - i've only just found it whilst in there fitting my FBH, and know it wasn't done up from new because it's a nyloc thats only just into the nylon retainer bit and nowhere near any clamp point.

Have a look round yours I'd suggest just in case.

Likewise i have a SD external cage and it has been brill. 20 years old. Been re powder coated once when the chassis was changed and has stopped the top peeling off with the roof tent when we rattled about in the Sahara.

It is now home to a bit of a pneumatic mast which it handles with no complaints.

I've been up to their workshops to collect some bits for a mate (they're reasonably local to me) and they've certainly got the skills there.

I'm not a fan of how far out they normally sit. As they're just a small company (family and a few mates) it's worth bearing in mind they can customise pretty much anything so might be worth bearing in mind. Ed

Thanking you all. SD have always been first choice for rep/build etc, also look (as pointed out on above, offering the lowest profiles). But looking into it a bit more and actually I might have to weld and spray the cage from Whitbread as well. Wipes out any 500 quid saving as I’d have to send myself on a welding course and then rent the kit. Rolling with laughter

But safety is what matters most, so thanks again for reinforcing that SD is the way to go. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Don't rent, buy. And the welding would be an investment Wink.

Years ago bought myself a MIG, then ended up with a TIG and recently had a friend (used to be a gas pipe welder among other things) show me how to stick.

You'll quickly save the money back on the welder. Ed

North delivered good quality but then as I ordered a flat pack I had to weld it myself. So the quality is now more depending on me then on north. Whistle

Next to hitting some trees and other item in my way the best test is pictured below:

I got stuck here and broke my winch cable. Then we tried to pull with 2 winches. No luck. After that we found that a tree truck was stuck before the chassis crossmember so just after this picture my 90 was pulled over and winched out easily.

The cages did move at all It kept the same distances to the roof gutter so I am happy.
My case is not completely standard. I have a cross in the middle hoop and the front part is bolted to the middle hoop so I can remove it easier when needed. Roel

I chose Whitbread as the Army use them and I thought you couldn't get a better recommendation than that. Been off once when I had a respray, painted now with Raptor. Have used it to winch myself out sideways. They also fitted a bull-bar which has saved many a impact down a lane. Peter
