Show me your matt/satin black front ends...
So after a period of inactivity when it comes to my car the bug seems to have reinfected me properly and i now spend most of my waking hours thinking about what I can do to it! I’ve a shed full of recent purchases in the shed awaiting fitting underneath the car to improve mud protection.

Now I’m thinking of how I can revamp/improve my front end (DRL bumper, grille and light surrounds) I find myself drawn to matt black, I’ve trawled the usual sites but would like some inspiration from others who’ve gone before me...what have you got up there, where did you source the bits etc? Any pictures are obviously welcome...here’s my starting point...

The original grille and surrounds, i sanded them back with wet n dry, then primed and then used gloss black, all rattle cans and from Halfords, as you can see they have toned done nicely, not 100% clean front though

I prefer the grey front end on a blue Defender, not sure why though Very Happy

My Oslo Blue defender is in the process of a refurb and it’s currently black front grille and light surrounds.

It looked like this when I first picked it up though

Mmm...Hadn’t really considered painting them myself. The light surrounds would be easy enough I’m guessing but the grille must a right pain in the jacksie I imagine. Some food for thought, thanks guys.

You know I’m a big fan of your work Darren - but you’ll also remember that I recently had a bit of an issue painting drive flanges(still a work in progress!) The multi faceted nature of the grille makes me think my feeble efforts with a spray can will end up looking rank amateur.

On the other hand I’ve already got plastic primer, normal primer, satin paint and lacquer in the shed. The stars are aligning!

Not a pure matt finish, but a raptor coating. Been on quite a while now and still very happy with it.

Took a lot of prep, sanding, cleaning, priming and paint but worth it, hard wearing, doesn't fade in the summer sun and matches the finish of my side sills, steps and rear bumperettes Thumbs Up

Also, if you have a standard grill, I suspect it will rattle towards the top. If you go here towards the bottom of the page you can see how I fixed mine - it's as quiet as a mouse now!

Top tip Chris, my v8's grill is the only thing that rattles... I never thought of stopping it, though now I just might! Thumbs Up

Cheers Greeni, just pleased I can add something to the forum, after all the help I have had from many people.

I hate rattles (I know, it's a Defender!) but I reckon I have got to the bottom of 99% of them now! Laughing

If your grill is like mine it moved about 5mm or so, and that did the trick for me. Needed a few layers on mine to fix. Rock solid now.

Cheers mate.

That's a lovely finish. Can I ask what paints you used? Was the base matt or gloss?

Thank you Thumbs Up

The basecoat I used isn’t actually a standard basecoat, you could just use a normal black (RAL9005) 2K basecoat though.
This is a direct to surface paint which has very high adhesion qualities so no primers at all needed, I use the same on bare steel, aluminium and plastic.
Black= PPG Selemix Direct 7-530 10% gloss level
Lacquer= Max Meyer Matt Clear 0710

The fluorescent lights in my shed make it look more reflective than it is really, in daylight it’s a nice flat matt finish. 1997 Ex-MOD 110, Pop Top Camper, build thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72352.html
