Snorkel has ALWAYS been a misnomer on 21st century Land Rovers
Too many electronics that could be dunked (and fizz) for it to be anything other than a Raised Air Intake Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history) |

And more likely to float away before being drowned.

RAI´s make good sense.
I´m always surprise how much dust collects in the cyclone filter at the top of my RAI. In summer I empty quite a handful of crud out of it several times per season. Drawing the combustion air from as far away from the ground as possible seems to make good sense. On a vehicle used in seriously dusty conditions off-road (which mine is not), it will save the air filter becoming clogged. I am no expert, but there are a great number of other things you need to raise above the water line before it becomes relevant to fit a water tight snorkel to your Defender. Gearbox and differential breathers, to begin with. Electrics are a major issue. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTs, Recaro CSs, anorak, wellingtons |

Hi all.. I have a 300TDI with a RAI .... but heard a bit of chatter about it affecting performance, don't get me wrong i'm not looking to increase boost or anything, just interested if there is any difference in having one fitted or not..... and if yes is there a way to attach/unattach when needed or not, other than undoing the jubilee clip ??? @steve_overland on Insta.

Fitted the RAI to our P400, not for the aesthetics, but due to the fact on some of the long outback unsealed road
trips we have done in our RRS, the air filter has remained reasonably clear compared to my in laws Nissan patrol on the same trips that required regular cleaning/replacing, they had an aftermarket snorkel, we had the LR RAI for the L320, it does its job, so I am putting some faith in the Deffas RAI to do the same.. 🤞 yet another pommie bar steward down under MY20 110 P400 SE Defender MY10 3.0 RR Sport Last edited by zilch on 27th Apr 2021 11:03am. Steve I have the Safari Snorkel snorkel on my TDi300 90 and that has a rotatable head and I’ve often wondered if having it facing forwards increase the “ram” effect to the intake and reduces it when the intake is to the rear to reduce dust intake. Only thing I’ve experienced was a very much reduced airflow with it facing forward when the plastic grill was broken and I hit a blue tit that flew up in front of the car and got sucked in through the hole in the grill........ the performance drop was huge and it didn’t do the blue tit much good either. I now have a stainless steel inlet cover on it

Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

I think on a 300TDI the performance impact of the snorkel is negligible.
The wind direction plays a much bigger part! Mine used to fly with a tailwind |

Did Pate at BAS do a test on RAI and snorkels on his rolling road? Im sure he did and as expected yes they reduce performance. 130's have feeling's as well you know

It rather depends on the starting point. On my 2.4 the snorkel has improved performance considerably when compared to the restrictive, leaky, and chronically poorly-designed factory induction system. Having said that, mine is more a properly-engineered induction system than just a snorkel.

RAI didn’t prevent Battin tins from appearing in my air filter box. Nor my intercooler. But DSL knows more than me. 🤪
