Just seen the Romain Grosjean crash and can't believe he walk away with only minor injuries!! Testment to the engineering in the safety features and the sheer balls and quick thinking to get yourself out of a fire ball!!
I can't quite understand how the car managed to split in two, but just thankful no one was seriously hurt! Pretty amazing that the front half of the car (safety cell) went through the middle of two runs of crash barrier and ended up what looks to be on it side. The fuel cell split and hence the size of the explosion and fire.
It was amazing that he got him self out and over the barrier pretty much unaided. I still remember when the halo was being tested on the Friday sessions, none of the teams seemed to take it seriously, they drove for one lap, said they did not like it and took it straight off. Hardly a serious test. It was the halo that opened the gap in the crash barrier and not Grojeans head.... I hope that that was not his last race in F1 as at present he does not have a drive next year. For me his best races were with Lotus. Good day for him to buy a lottery ticket. |

Not sure where the fuel cell is located in a current F1 car but this link gives some idea of the aftermath.........

Amazing how strong the halo is too when you see the damage it did to the Armco, turned the car on its side yet it remained in tact protecting Grojean’s head Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Martin (know it all) Brundell said that it was the crash barrier the cut the car in two and the cut line is were the fuel cells are. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Considering that most of the F1 teams were very dismissive of the halo (so it was reported) when it was tested, maybe they will have second thoughts now?
There have been so many improvements in F1 safety over the years. Those pictures are quite remarkable and it does go to show how well designed they are that anyone could walk away from that kind of a crash. |

Ross Braun made a good point, saying that the fuel cell of over 100 litres didn’t rupture. If it had then there would obviously have been a much larger explosion and fire ball. I’m guessing he’s right.

Apparently the impact was measured at 53G Given that, it is amazing that he remained conscious. If he hadn't extracted himself from the car I suspect that the outcome would have been very different.

I notice that the BBC reported that he was trapped in the car, despite having footage of him getting himself out. What is wrong with journos these days, ffs!

Re Halos, don’t forget that there was a 2nd incident at this race when the halo saved the driver from having his head crushed, Lance Stroll’s car inverted not long after the race restarted. Correct Tim. Any other race this would have been headline news. Poor Lance. Upstaged by the pyrotechnics
I was saying to my Dad, an upside down F1 car is not something you see every day - which is quite surprising as you would assume that the way the wheels interlock in tight corners, it would be a lot more usual in races. Think of the days of Stirling Moss, they didn't even have roll bars above the drivers! Oh, and congratulations to Lewis. Another sterling day at the office for him and Mercedes Those Guys do make it look easy. I think TV is to blame. The cars never look that fast on the TV compared to watching it live at a circuit. The bonus of telly coverage is you do get to see the whole of the circuit rather than two corners maximum, the toilets at home are cleaner and the beer is considerably cheaper. |
