What was the view of the garage that fitted the transfer box, etc? Presumably you mentioned the issue and asked them to investigate. |

I really do wish I was imagining it landyandy ! I haven’t driven another defender for a while but equally don’t feel it would shed any light on my problem. The issue isn’t any further than the transfer box , the vibrations are still there with both propshafts removed . So I could check Diffs but it’s not going to help with this particular issue . The garage absolutely agree there’s a problem , they’re lovely guys but not the sharpest tools in the box . They want to go all out and swap the gearbox over , I’m clearly reluctant without any proof . Gears are all fine , no crunching etc To be honest it’s the expense that’s holding me back and I don’t want to mis diagnose again , although the transfer box replacement is fantastic ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

A small update .
So today the defender has started popping out of first gear , it goes with quite a wallop . Must have happened four times today from a standstill . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

Have vibration im fighting with now. For now front,rear axle rebuilds and some other details.
Also have few times popping out of 1st gear, but since I take greater care to fully engage the gear no problem. |

My transfer box is just 20K km after rebuild (sleeve on intermediate shaft, ashcroft hd centre pin for diff, new bearings, new shims etc).
Also had one on the shelf that I've replaced to make sure this is not the case. My front propshaft is new Hardy Spicer . No lift. Ashcroft airlockers front and rear. Front and rear diffs and and bearings checked etc. Also fitted new MT82-LT230 coupling shaft and housing and MT82 gearbox with used but low mileage one. Replaced also RH engine mount and RH Transfer box mounting rubber . Still no luck. Without front prop shaft it drives smooth like cream, while without rear it rumbles under load (full throttle on 3 and 4) uphill when 62-72 km/h . I'm still going to replace LH engine mount and if that doesn't fix the problem I will look for G-L double cardan as Im out of Ideas. |

My transfer box was also new and from the same company !
It took two swaps to get a good one , now I’m happy with it . Get it up off the ground on axle stands and Ideally remove the wheels. Pop it in third or fourth gear and get underneath and take a look . In my case you could see the flange on the Transfer Box bouncing about . Might be , in the end rebuild is not a new t-box.
I did checked the front flange and there is bit of play on it - there is special loose bearing (replaced this one too) - c3 class that has 0.2mm play build in , but... one more culprit - central diff front shaft going into centre diff housing - got new shaft but is still bit loose. When checking with dial gauge it gives around 0.9mm play on the output flange. That coupled with angled flanges design on Puma might be the problem. Front diff pinion perfect and no play on it. Also forgot to mention - replaced clutch 20K km's ago as well. But Im going to take on as follows now : 1. LH engine mount (RH already replaced) 2. GL double cardan prop shaft or I will consider T-Box as you suggest. Probably I will start with propshaft as its easier to replace and there is lots of discussion about the flange misalignment in Puma causing all sorts of issues. In the end due to the design its probably "sum of all (f)wears" issue . Some of T-Box, some of use on LT82 , some on clutch, some on engine run (injectors balance) that contributes it all. |

The flanges are out on a puma which is why you can't lift them too much, without lots of other mods. A dc front prop may mask it but won't fix the problem. I wouldnt be fitting one. Cheers

My Puma is not lifted. I know the flanges angle problem. Still the vibration/resonance is annoying so I will try the LH engine mount first. Then will see.
