Doesn't the tax work off List Price, so it doesn't matter what level of discount the dealer gives?

That happened to me with my Mini Countryman but BMW offered to pay the tax AND to give me a 2018MY instead if a 2017 because of a mistake made by them that delayed my build by 6 weeks! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Maybe I’m expecting too much, but I’ve signed an order form saying my build is just a tad over £48k so come next year I expect my car to be a tad over £48k.

I seem to remember that during the 2007 crash LR dealerships were offering 0% finance to stimulate sales and move their cars? Or have I imagined that?

I think the issue is what the list price is rather than what you've agreed to pay. As you say, the latter shouldn't change but if the tax rules relating to the list price changes then you could be stuck with that. In practice of course, you're clearly paying much more than the current threshold anyway so unless there were a massive change, it won't affect you. Import tariffs after 1st Jan is the bigger worry, to be 10% on new cars assuming no deal.
From what I read that will translate into about 6-8% on the final price paid on this side of the channel. |

With import taxes my 90 will be around £53k, not a disaster but a long way from the £44k for my 20MY spec.

It’s just a guesstimate, it could be hugely inaccurate and a million miles off but I’ve taken 10% of my cars purchase price off £48k and added that on. As I says it’s just guess work but it’s as much as I’m willing to pay for a 90.

The tax would only be applied to the base car, so not any of the dealer-installed options & accessories, registration fee, road tax, other dealer charges etc. - all of which can be a significant part of the OTR price.
Of course there’s nothing to say that the prices for some of those other bits won’t go up as well unfortunately. My vehicle has been pushed back a week which now puts it at the retailer on Christmas Day - I’m hopeful that it doesn’t slip any further as if it gets pushed into 2021 and there are indeed changes to pricing it will likely be unaffordable. |

Car pricing seems crazy at the moment.
With it being the end of the month and the mess the dealers are in between not having sold allocations plus model year changes there are some stonking deals at the moment. I have a deal on the table to swap my D5 for a MY21 Dynamic HSE D300 for almost no cost to swap (man maths applied) . Incentives on new model years are virtually unheard of. Outside JLR we walked past a closed VW showroom at the weekend and saw the ID3. I messaged the dealer through Carwow and ended up signing a deal for a 1st edition with £9k off. The models only just been launched, cars being PDI'd and registered tomorrow we collect it Saturday. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE RR MY23 HSE PHEV D5 MY19 HSE - Now Sold D4 MY16 HSE Luxury - Now Sold D4 MY12 HSE - Gone D3 MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten |
