Propshaft lengths
I would like to order a shiny new pair of propshafts from Gwyn Lewis, and went to confirm the lengths on my project, expecting them to match up with what I had originally on the vehicle.

It is a 1989 110 CSW v8, and is now running on:

(a) A new Richards Chassis
(b) R380 instead of the original LT85
(c) The original LT230, reconditioned by Mr Ashcroft
(d) Original rear Salisbury differential, reconditioned by Devon 4x4
(e) Original front diff, but put into a 2010 year Puma axle casing
(f) 2" lift all round.

The transfer box (and gearbox) are on the unmodified mountings on the chassis.

From Gwyn's site (https://gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product-category/propshafts/), we see that the various models used a variety of different propshaft lengths, those being:

Rear:
2.5/2.5Td/200Tdi 110 Salisbury diff: 1045 +- 8mm
300Tdi/Td5 110 Salisbury diff: 1095 +- 8mm
Td5 late type, with Puma/P38 4 pin diff: 1170 +- 8mm
Puma: 1100 +- 8mm

So the v8 is not listed specifically. Measuring the top of the back of the axle flange, to the face of mounting on the transfer box - top to top, I measure:

1109mm - 8mm flange width = 1101mm

So I am in the range of the 300Tdi/Td5 110 Salisbury setup. I am a little surprised its not the 200Tdi size, but ok I guess the R380+LT230 combination is closer to the Td5 than the 200Tdi.

So far so good. However, the front is much more "interesting". The original propshaft is too short to bridge the gap between the axle and the transfer box:

which surprises me. I *think* that its fully extended, at least it smoothly opens up to that point then stops dead. Measuring the top the two flanges gives me a reading of around:

674mm, -8mm differential flange width, for a total of 666mm

Again, consulting Gwyn's website, we see the following propshaft lengths:

Front:
2.5/2.5Td/200Tdi: 685 +- 8mm
300Tdi/Td5: 637 +- 8mm
Puma: 700 +- 8mm

None of which are in the range of my measured length of 666mm.

I had quite a bit of head-scratching on this, until I measured the distance the other way round, while lying under the vehicle, measuring the distance between the bottom of the flanges, where I found the measurement was much less, at:

644mm -11mm LT230 flange width = 633mm

which is now within the range of 300Tdi. Frankly I was amazed there is over 30mm difference between the upper and lower flange surfaces - but this does seem to be because the front diff is angled upwards, whereas the LT230 flange is pretty near the vertical.

If I take an average of these two, I *should* get the distance between the centres, which would be: 650mm

Taking into account the 2" lift, we are nearly within reach of the 300Tdi size. While I know we can get custom length props made up, I am puzzled as to why I'm not bang on standard distances. Am I being overly fussy?

My questions to confirm my understanding of the above is as follows:

Are the front axle housings all the 'same' as far as the differential mounting surface is located, and the rotated angle of the axle (ie. the front radius arm bolt mounting locations)?

Given that the LT230 should be in its original location with respect to the axles, would we expect the 110 v8 to use the same propshafts as the 300Tdi/Td5?

Cheers,

Chris,

If you try measuring the prop using Gwyn’s method in the link, give Gwyn a ring and discuss it with him, they do make custom props to order as well or they may have other options that aren’t on the website. Gwyn and Ben are both really helpful so should be able to sort you out 👍

Thanks for the link jimbo. I don't really want to take my springs out to measure the distance on the bump stops, but should be able to lift the front off the ground on the chassis to see the maximum distance. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I think the 2 inch lift means you'll never be bang on standard distances. Whilst a standard prop will work with a lift, it will be more extended than its' nominal length for a vehicle with standard height suspension. Darren
