Thanks Hank! I'll take a look at those belts but I don't think it's the same problem.
Mine doesn't start on first push button start, it does squeal as mentioned in that thread, but its definitely not a chirp. It's more like a trapped pig on fire. It also seems to surge the power too. Occasionally it does start on first attempt but you can tell it only just caught. Always starts fine on the second attempt. I'm praying it's not the starter motor, is a nightmare to change on these. |

Yeah I watched your video. Difficult to tell but I thought it sounded a bit rubbery? What engine is it? > 110 XS Double Cab

It almost sounds like some sort of electrically driven servo motor. Is it an automatic box? Hard to tell from the video where the noise is coming from, but could it be some sort of gearbox interlock which locks the vehicle in Park until the ignition is switched on? Perhaps it has gone faulty and is only working when you press the start button the 1st time. Complete guess and based on zero knowledge of the vehicle !!

I tried to get another video with the bonnet open but guess what? It started first time. It's so difficult to capture! But once it starts on the first go, it starts first time every time until it sits for a while. It's a manual 318d 2007 3 series btw. Thanks for the help, will try taking another look tomorrow. |

edit: thought it might be exhaust actuator flap but the noise is different and also after the engine starts. Unless it sounds different form inside the car?
