A thud when changing gear is commonplace as you have seen from the responses, and has diverse range of causes. Mine behaves the same, and I think most Pumas with original transmission components suffer from greater transmission slack than any of the preceding versions. Nothing in my drive train is judged as being excessively worn so I'm driving "around" the thud until such time as a definite culprit surfaces. Replacing components ranges from affordable (drive member flange) to a chunk of significance (diff) and personally I would take the opportunity to upgrade the component at that point, adding to the cost, hence my reluctance to renew components without proven cause.

Just upgraded to Ashcroft HD drive shaft flanges as had a bit of play with the rear wheel hubs. Clunk or thud on gearchanges now gone Very Happy

Mine does it if i don't change at 2000rpm. i think its the clutch centreplate moving back and forth as it has a slight rattle on idle. 1953 80"

As mentioned DM’s and or Prop UJ’s are typical culprits for this, usually the former at higher speeds and the latter for lower speeds but is variable. Chillin In The Backwoods🇬🇧🇺🇸
