Same happened in Mud and Ruts but I wasn’t stopped long enough on the rock crawl to find out and today the desert was flooded so no need for Sand Mode and the water splash wasn’t long enough or deep enough to even try the Wade mode.
Might have been a very wet and soggy day but 4 New Defenders, 4 old Defenders, 1 D4 and 4 Discovery Sports had a great Adventure Trek day at the Dunkeld LRE. The morning was spent on their half day course training area which was fun in the weather and the afternoon we went Adventuring on the Atholl Estates land. Very very boggy in places, nobody got stuck although the D4 did struggle on one particularly difficult bit, probably because he was the rail end car but I was 2nd last and on the Duratracs and in Manual Low 4th breezed up the muddy slope and round a very tight bend. Some interesting things learned about the car too - Hill hold/ Gradient release operate differently depending on whether you are in low or high range - in low range it won’t engage on the flat like it does in high when you are traffic lights but in low range it will hill hold and gradient release on slopes, even quite small ones. Found that the gear box is smart enough to know that you might want to pull away in 3rd so it will let you but if you select low4th or above it will select it but as soon as you start moving off it drops you automatically into 3rd, also if you are driving along in 4th or above and slow down at all you get an automatic down shift of 1 gear but stay slow it will also drop down to 3rd or 2nd and if you stop for more than a couple of minutes it drops into 1st but from there you can manually select 2nd or 3rd. In deeper mud the car was happy to trickle along at 4-5mph in 3rd without forcing any down shift too. The D200 and my car were the only 2 of the New Defenders on All Terrains, the LRE car and the other D240 Furst Edition were on All Seasons and had no problems - the other 1st Ed was actually doing a demo to a customer and belonged to Pentland Perth. Mud flaps, Silver car had none and got a lot of dirt up the rear bumper, Black D200 had the smaller flaps and no mud up the back, same for me on the big Classic mud flaps. Other things - Suspension goes rock hard, rides like an old Defender on long rippled/rough surfaces, not unpleasant but definitely the 2nd chamber in the doughnuts was pumped up. Mine and the LRE’s car both went into “optimised” height at one stage but could tell if it was super-extended or the “oh super extended height ain’t enough” height, I just got a message on the dash saying “optimising ride height” or something similar. I know LRE’s aren’t supposed to be that challenging but in today’s weather and with the ground conditions it was “Technical” in a couple of places, great fun and a grand day out. I have some photos but the weather was so wet and were were in low cloud at one stage that I don’t have many, will post them shortly Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. There are certain parameters that need to be met on shutdown to keep the TR mode selected. Its not a tr2 specific feature. Been around for some time. Low range, off road height for example.
Don't most of the jlr products do that on gbox selection? None of them let you select too high a gear to pull away, well you can select it but it drops you down on manouvering. With tr selected they will down shift within reason to select best gear speed for engine speed for vehicle speed against tr selected and gradient is my understanding Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Back to loving it! My 1996 Defender 90 is getting next to no use but in our present weather here - driving rain and cold - it just so nice to to be in a car with good windscreen wipers, climate control that can really warm up the cabin (without misting up every window in the car) and that is very comfortable on the drives to and from the off-roading locations - shortly I’m setting off on a 2 hour drive to southern Scotland for another wet day out on the hills and trails!
With COVID restrictions here regarding car sharing I cannot take any of my usual friends and neighbours or my 7 year old grand-nephew (he’s back at school ) who loves coming with me who are not in my “bubble” it’s also great to have a decent audio system that doesn’t get drowned out by engine noise on the longer drives. I was surprised how technical yesterday’s run was for an LRE day out, I suppose we all knew our cars and don’t need to be shown just how capable even the smaller cars in range (and without a transfer case and low ratios) are on rough and muddy trails. That was a good day out, sorry didn’t get much of a chance to speak to other people due to the social distancing etc.
Drive up the hill on Atholl estates was the best bit as there was an actual seance of jeopardy not knowing if you were going to make it through a section due to,the weather. The off road course is good however You know all the cars can make it through easy so it’s not that challenging. I was most surprised at how the Disco sport’s performed at the front. They made it through some pretty deep mud and ruts on road tyres.. I understand why the split the convey at the end though as they were not making it through the final up hill section past the lochs... Would happily go another one of these as they can utilise different tracks next time that are more challenging in the estate..different route each time... I also found myself spending waaaaaay to much time looking at the New Defenders and thinking I quite like one of them..... must resist !!!. 2002 Td5 | 90 County Station Wagon | Oslo Blue 2006 Td5 | 90 County Station Wagon | Tonga Green (Gone ) 2002 Td5 | 90 County Station Wagon | Zambezi Silver (Gone) |

I see from the guy in the Black New Defender that the LRE is running some sort if advanced training day on 14th November. I’ll have to get on the LRE mailing list as their website isn’t kept up to date by LR’s publicity team unfortunately. The most recent event showing us from thus time last year!
When I posted about the Adventure day it was the most challenging run I had done in my new one but yesterday in the Forrest Estate in Galloway was more challenging with a fair bit iof rock crawl on steep wet surfaces involved (and only cost £15...... ). That’s when the new version of HDC came into its own - it really is very slow on its lowest setting! Tim
Did you ever figure out how to get it to super extended height? is it by putting it into wading mode? If so - can you then keep the height and go into the other modes? THANKS |

Not yet Simon, in level 4 C-19 restrictions in this part of Scotland and any off-roading is curtailed so I haven’t had any opportunity to see if it will go there. We have a review of tiers here on Friday next and the Givt in Edinburgh promises to review the levels such that nobody will stay in level 4 BUT today on the Andrew Marr show our Minister of Health let slip that there is a possibility that some health trusts might not get put down to tier 3............. Thanks
After I posted - I looked on the i Guide and it says the vehicle can be raised further when in Extended mode by holding the brake and pressing the UP button for 3 seconds. But it does not say how to get to extended mode initially - just that its an automatic setting It does say Offroad has 2 heights - Offroad 1 (40mm) and Offroad 2 (75mm) But does not tell you how to get to those Also does not say if Offroad 2 is the Extended Mode or Super Extended mode or? |

Ok - found 1 LR advertising bulletin that says
The introduction of air suspension helps to transform the 4x4’s on-road handling and supports its all-terrain capability, providing an off-road ride height lift of 75mm and supreme ride comfort across all surfaces. An additional 70mm of lift means the air system can raise the body by a maximum of 145mm when needed, while Elegant Arrival automatically lowers the body by 40mm to aid access. So it would seem we have 7 settings Super Extended Height (145mm) Extended Height (120mm??) Off Road 2 Height (75mm) Off Road 1 Height (40mm) Normal Height (0mm) Prepare to Exit - 20mm lower than normal height( - 20mm) Additional 20mm lower when Door is open - (-40mm) Does that seem correct to you guys who have an actual car? THANKS |

I'm curious as well if you can actually select the extended mode... I was high centered in a lot of snow and the car gave me the option once I got in. But getting out and digging to put the traction boards in it seemed to have lowered it again. I wanted it to stay in the extended mode but it seemed to not stay there. (I got stuck shortly down the trail after the image) Low traction launch was awesome but I had to use the custom config so that I could keep both my lockers locked to ease out on the traction boards.
Click image to enlarge I was prompted to Hold the break and the raise button for 3secs and then it flashed that it was in extended mode. The strange thing was that the raised height light wasn't on. Instead the normal ride height light was on. This made me get out a couple times to ensure it was at least in off-road mode. Does anyone know how to select the two different off-road heights? Is that something new for the 2021 models? |

Do you have the auto lower on exit selected in the dash option - if so that might be the problem, when you open the drivers door it will lower the car.
