Maybe not a magazine most read, or are even aware exists, but it's interesting that dealers name the one car – regardless of brand and franchise loyalties – that was the best of the last 12 months.
"The winner, by quite some margin, is the Land Rover Defender." "This is another car that’s been badly needed by dealers with respondents saying it gives the brand its authenticity again. ‘This awards tell us this is a very special car,’ says Jaguar Land Rover UK managing director, Rawdon Glover. ‘Internally we’ve been very excited about the car – an awful lot of work has gone into it with making it respect its history but not be harnessed by it. Seeing it recognised is really special.’ Glover added: ‘It’s been a long time coming with the Defender being out of our portfolio for some years. Strategically, it’s an important third pillar for the Land Rover brand, but for retailers it’s an incremental nameplate. ‘It’s new business and it’s in high demand, but that aside it’s given the whole network and all Land Rover staff a real lift at a really critical time.’ The Defender was launched during lockdown and at the ‘worst possible time’, says Glover. But high levels of customer interest – over 250,000 configurations were made when the car launched – and strong initial sales are pleasing, and Glover expects this to only grow as the full product line-up launches." Still spinning the initial sales, despite the facts showing the exact opposite. Runners up: " Our first highly commended place goes to the Porsche Taycan with dealers telling us they were stunned at how Porsche had created arguably the most desirable and exciting electric car at the first attempt. Long waiting lists would suggest Porsche has got it right too. Second highly commended place goes to a car that’s badly needed for Ford dealers. The Puma arrives carrying all the romance of its nineties namesake at a time when buyers are going balmy for SUVs and mild-hybrid engines. The fact it looks good, has a clever boot and handles superbly is just the icing on the cake." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/ca...020/204522 |

Yeah my dealer doesn’t seem to have too much trouble shifting them, but as you say, I’ve no idea where, I’ve only seen two.

So this is an award to for dealers Based on dealers telling the magazine (about dealerships) that they love their new car most? Not very ‘independent’. And one would argue that Porsche is a brand that never needs to sell itself; its reputation, the car journalist reviews, the clients, the waiting lists, the brand, the reliability, the quality, the performance, the heritage etc all do that for them. I mean, when was the last time you saw a Porsche advert on TV? Never? When was the last time your saw a New Defender ad? Last night? The LR dealers need to promote their brand against a waning reputation. Monsieur Le Grenadier
I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

That's not what I said. "Still spinning the initial sales" ~ I don't think anyone would would describe the actual Q1 retail figures as strong? https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic73382.html |

I would imagine you dont see any adds on tv that’s aimed at wealthy people because most wealthy people dont waste time watching tv. |

Anyone who has been involved in ‘awards’ knows this is utter . As a company you pay for a table or two at the event (pre-Covid) or X amount of advertising space in specific magazines or websites and hey presto you win or are placed, depending on how much you pay.

You do know it's not an award voted on by the magazine or it's staff but rather by it's subscribers?
And if you think it was fixed to give a major manufacturer, and possibly a major advertiser, an ego boost, you should read where both Jaguar and Land Rover come out in the manufacturer awards. |

I'm wondering how you win car of the year but place 20th out of 26 as a manufacturer, with some miserable scoring in some categories, if you are funding the awards?

Looks like the high scoring items are those that make the dealer the most money............ the things that cost the dealers or cause them hassles are average or below average. It would be interesting to see the charts for the German brands Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Does anyone have a clue what an "incremental nameplate" is? Perhaps it is one of those times when a pretentious person takes words that have meaning and uses them in a meaningless jingoistic way - "It's an incremental nameplate oozing verticality!" |

I would have thought bonus and ROI would better reflect the financial benefits of being a LR dealer - both score low? Have a look at other scores: https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/ca...020/204372 Kia was top with scores across the board all over 90%; followed by Lexus and Volvo. Highest German company was Merc at 4th. Audi were 7th, BMW were 10th, and VW were 12th. |
