2” receiver hitch / tow hitch
Anyone seen any UK options for the US-style 2” hitch tow bar set up?

Have one on my current 110 and would love to be able to get one on the new defender. Cheers, David

It's very unlikely that they've been type-approved for the UK and Europe. Darren

I think most of the ones available for the old defender weren’t strictly type approved either... Still available though and serve a purpose. Cheers, David

The difference is that up until recently, they didn't need to be type-approved for the old Defender and the vehicle design pre-dated the requirement. That won't be the same for the new Defender.

The kit exists - it's the standard fitment in the US and Aus - but it won't be legal to use here. Darren

But the ones for L322 FFRR were so you might be able to fit one of those, I had the receiver system on both my FFRR L322’s - there are two different designs though, early ones the “peg” that went into the receiver rattled really badly, in the later cars the nose of the tow hitch fitting was a much snugger fit in the receiver and eliminated the rattling, it was also made theft-proof which the earlier design wasn’t! On FFRR you also needed a special subframe to mount it under the car. I have the 2003 Accessory brochure if you want the part numbers for the bits. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

hmmm interesting... wasn't aware the law had changed re: type approval. I suppose the detachable tow bar and the chassis mounted tow hooks might have to manage for me!

I wonder if a 2'' hitch could be type approved... or just no market for it really? Cheers, David

Problem would be that in Europe the car probably isn’t homologated for the receiver so if you fitted one you might have issues with your insurers in the event of an “incident” resulting in a claim. The receiver is homologated for many overseas markets where L633 New Defender is sold ........... USA, South Africa and Australia IIRC. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

No reason it couldn't be type approved if JLR wanted to. The Raptor has a receiver hitch as standard in the UK, I believe.

A 2 inch receiver setup is exactly what I wanted for my 2.2 110, but because it’s too young I can’t have a non type approved towing setup. I wonder what will happen to type approval once we leave the EU. Perhaps the rules will change to the benefit of us wanting a 2inch receiver. But I won’t hold my breath.

Not a chance I fear, sadly!

Remember that these motoring regs are not EU regs.
