Just been on the phone to a plan thatcham for a motor insurance quote. I was with them 2 years ago so thought I would give them a go again.
Unfortunately they were unable to find an underwriter who would quote citing "a high level of thefts of defenders" as an excuse. I don't have any serious mods to the vehicle so it's pretty standard. Has anyone else had any experience like this? |

I've not had a problem, but insurance is very postcode dependant. I assume it is the Thatcham Office you're speaking to? James

Yes it was the thatcham office as mentioned in my post.
All good now, my present brokers reduced their original quote for this year after speaking with them. They were a bit surprised by A plan being unable to find an underwriter willing to quote. |

 unfortunately there have been quite a few defender thefts in recent times, not always the whole vehicle either, I've seen quite a few posts on my Facebook feed recently of doors and bonnets going missing!
We can't win them all - glad you managed to get suitable insurance even if it wasn't with us

Well after seeing them mentioned on here umpteen times and my renewal due I thought I would give them a try and we’ll done A-plan you came up trumps my next 12 months is with you

New cover starts with A-Plan tomorrow on the household fleet. Covered the 110 including all mods plus business use cheaper than I could get anywhere. Thanks due to Beatrice in the Thatcham office. Ian

I have been shopping around for an insurance policy, which would allow business travel together with the all the mods on my Defender 90 TDCi, without much satisfaction 'til now. After a read of this forum, I today gave A-Plan a call at Thatcham and got hold of Gareth. He was extremely helpful in getting the policy I needed at a great price (£80 cheaper than Flux), with green lane cover thrown in. I was able to email Gareth a list of my Defender's mods and this now forms part of my policy, which was exactly what I wanted. All other insurers (as advertised in the LRO mag) were much less accommodating - me spending ages verbally reeling them off and not knowing which ones the insurer had considered! I would definitely recommend getting a quote from A-Plan.

I don't understand why green lane cover is seen as an extra, or sold a suchby some insurers. Be interested in A Plan's view. They are just normal public roads that happen to be un-surfaced aren't they? The road to my house could be classed as a green lane (its un-adopted and un-surfaced), but have never given a second thought to whether I'm insured or not. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Green lane and off-roading cover - is the name of the extra cover included. It means you are covered for off-roading and club organised events, which are not covered under standard insurance.
