My last ship was quite small by today’s size - 292m long and 4800 twenty foot containers, todays ships are 400m long and 24,000 20 foot containers. I’ve sailed in ships with $54,000 a day. As Master in them it was part my many responsibilities to try to keep it below that. The company I worked for for the last 14 years was Maersk Line - their owned fleet was 360 ships and increasing monthly - they owned every one of their ships, no financing. Of new tonnage while I worked for them. Their newest ships cost around $200,000,000 a piece and they were buying 18-20 at a time.......... In addition to the owned fleet there were some 200 ships on charter and then further joint ventures with other companies and the ship sharing with them all in all the entire fleet numbers more than 700 ships varying in side from small coastal container ships around 200 containers capacity doing coastal/ North Sea feeding services through to the monsters at 23000 20ft units. The monster ships have actually lower running costs just by virtue of their size/ capacity and crew costs are the same as the small ones as they have only between 15 and 19 crew, the same as the coastal ships. Economy of scale comes into play.
They had the cash in the bank from owning the only licence to extract oil and gas from the Danish sector of the North Sea for many years and charging Maersk Tax on every barrel they drilled.

My last ship was Maersk Utah - I only sailed for 4 months last winter in her to between USA East Coast and Europe with the Christmas period spent around the ports of the Eastern Medi https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/detai...AERSK_UTAH

I spent 6 years in the ship before that, trading to West Africa from Spain and Portugal then we changed to Northern Europe to Montreal and Halifax all year round as she was an ice strengthened ship and could ice break up to 1m thick sea ice at 18 knots.....she was Maersk Patras
https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/detai...RSK_PATRAS

But prior to her I was sailing in 10,000 x 20ft capacity ships Maersk Seville and Maersk Sydney

https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/detai...RSK_SYDNEY

Today’s biggest ships are these things

Last partial fuelling I did on Maersk Utah cost $2.2 million which lasted 28 days before the next partial fill up - in total 2500t, part was “cheaper” 5% sulphur HFO, part was the very expensive 0.1% max sulphur - if I could park it in Sainsbury’s forecourt I would get a vast number of Nectar points for that! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Yes, prior to the fuel price rocketing I was sailing in ships that burned 600tonnes a day........... often steam ships but also motor ships that had a service speed in excess of 30knots. One class of ships I sailed in were built as steam ships and had a fuel capacity of 12,000 tonnes and when sailing during the time when the Suez Canal was closed had to go from Europe to Japan via the Cape if Good Hope - they would bunker in Rotterdam and would require to take another 12000 tonnes in Tokyo to be able to get back to Europe via the Panama Canal - they were powered by 2 sets of steam turbines one “engine” for each propellor. They were re-engined to 2 big Diesel engines and fuel consumption reduced to 300tpd flat out but also their speed was reduced to 25 knots form 33. We now have monster ships that flat out at 19 knots burn less than 300 tonnes a day to carry 23000 x 20 foot containers - those steam turbine ships of the 1970’s only carried 4000 x 20ft containers maximum!

You might find the stats in this item about one of Maersk’s latest builds - a series of 31 super eco ships costing around $190 million a pop....... 2 x 32000bhp 14 cylinder prime movers but very low daily consumption (relatively speaking!) compared to older ships. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_E-class_container_ship Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
