Looking for an off grid island lifestyle?
The residents of the island of Rhum in the Small Isles off the west of Scotland are looking for families to move there. It’s a magic place I have visited at lot while sailing on the West Coast
'Off-grid' islanders on Rum appeal for new residents https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-53904491

Useless info - the island used to have 3 cars on the tracks that count as roads, all were Defenders and on the plates Rhum 1 Rhum 2 and Rhum 3......... no need for MOT’s as they don’t come to the mainland! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Even more useless info.... the castle was built by Sir Geo. Bullough, Baronet - described as a 'playboy'. He had pet crocodiles kept in heated pools on one side of the castle - the Inner Hebrides not being a natural crocodile habitat.

But... back on the motoring theme, I'd heard that one of the longer tracks was actually built so that he could race his Bentley to the other side of the island and back. I suspect he wasn't much worried about the maintenance costs. Donald

Even more useless info
Kinloch castle was IIRC quite a pioneer in house building at the time - a number of firsts:
1) it was a very early prefab castle built first in Ayrshire, dismantled and shipped to Rhum for final construction
2) 1st house in the YK to have its own hydro-electric power supply
3) 1st house in the UK to be fully double glazed
4) as above it had heated tropical pools in the gardens - using up excess hydro power to heat the water
5) it has one of the biggest Orchestrions in the world, it still works
6) it was the first fully air conditioned private house in the UK

George Bullough Jnr was so wealthy from his fathers money (he became an industrialist millionaire on the strength of inventing a part of a cotton loom that meant he didn’t need to employ several staff on each machine) he took 21 of his best pals on a round the world jolly in his father’s steam yacht. The dining saloon table and chairs from the yacht are still in use in the Kinloch House. Son then frittered away his inheritance and when he died his wife became a recluse on Rhum which when she died the Island was donated to the National Trust for Scotland who in the 1950’s basically left the heating on locked the doors and left it with a resident warden who in the 1990’s started to run it as a private hotel much to the disgust of the NTS who sacked him. We used to call there twice during our summer sailing holiday on the west coast for a meal and a bath! The plumbing is quite amazing and to royal standards as regular visitor to the house were Lilly Lantree and her liver if the week......

Oh,and if you are a plumber the plumbing system of the house is featured in several books on the subject because a lot of the fittings and baths were custom made for the house and are unique
Today the island is used as a research base and was rumoured to be going to be one of the places where the wolf might be re-introduced to Scotland. There are several animal and plant species unique to the island too.

if you are able to get a trip out there it is an amazing house to visit. https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/rum...index.html
