Other members of the "innovation cluster" are the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), based in Stockholm, and ship design and energy optimisation specialist SSPA Sweden AB, based in Gothenburg. KTH is responsible for the aerodynamics, sailing mechanics and performance analysis. SSPA provides expertise with the development and validation of new testing methods, aerodynamic and hydrodynamic simulation methods and risk situation. The vessel has four 100m tall masts with 80m high sails made of a mixture of metal and composite. The sails can be reefed to reduce the height to around 50m. The ship has a length of 200m and beam of 40m. Service speed is 10 knots, so an Atlantic crossing would take 12 days. Hybrids / electric vehicles have been in use a long time by the armed forces.
We outfitted a logger onto a RN Frigate that had gas turbine, marine diesel and electric motors for propulsion. Gas turbine for running fast when hunting stuff, diesel for general pootling around and electric motors for sub-hunting. Entire hull was also fibre-glass for minesweeping. Quietest, stealthiest and greenest mode of transport for British infantry. And it only requires a ration pack and doss-bag to recharge.

"MOL collier to be equipped with Wind Challenger sail Mitsui OSK Line Ltd says it will equip a 235m long and 43m wide 99,000dwt collier scheduled for delivery in 2022 with a hard sail developed as part of the Wind Challenger project
Wind Challenger sail deployed at sea. Performance and condition will be monitored from the bridge The announcement was made jointly by MOL’s President & CEO Junichiro Ikeda and Eichi Higara, President of Oshima Shipbuilding Co Ltd. The system converts wind energy to propulsive force using a telescopic hard sail. The partners will continue to move toward a detailed design and implementation. Based on a single sail fitting, GHG emissions would be reduced by between 5% and 8%, on a Australia-Japan and a Japan-North America voyage respectively. Did you have a look? It's a hybrid with the engine able to charge the batteries and export power. One thing I know about the modern military is that without the ability to generate electricity in the field, many things grind to a halt. |

If you'd seen these ride down Birdcage Walk, you'd know they are definitely not quiet and the sweepers with shovels that follow them may challenge you on low pollution.  |
