The only thing with brake cleaner is that some types react very badly with some plastics and can destroy them quickly. If there is anything plastic in there it could get damaged. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

the wading plug should not be left in the bell housing for normal use, otherwise oil has nowhere to escape and could build up and end up on the clutch. (rear crank seal)
The wading plug should only be fitted if/when you intend to do some "wading" Just leave it out, any brake/clutch fluid or oil will slowing drain - you can wipe down any external surfaces, no need to clean inside - it won't do any harm. Doesn't sound like you have a crank leak, so with the wading plug left in the tool box, you shouldn't see any leaks on the driveway |

From my understanding on Td5 and later vehicles the wading plug is left fitted all the time and removed on servicing and checked. There is also a small grove in the bell housing to allow any contaminates to run out of. Again this needs to be kept clear so I tend to shove a cable tie up the grove to keep it clear.

To be honest it is quite confusing with the amount of plugs present ( 3 i think) and yes I noticed the slot you are speaking of. It is about 5mm by 2mm. there always seems to be a drop of reddish fluid coming out not sure if that was clutch fluid or gearbox oil now.
the plug in the lowest position is removed now. No wading done here. and it is in the dashboard just in case. cheers |

If it’s red fluid it is the mtf from the gearbox. Keep an eye on it’s level. They aren’t cheap and don’t hold loads of oil 👍🏻👍🏻
