You'll have to drop the tank, remove the sender/pick-up, and fish it out that way I suspect, unless it's lodged in the filler pipe where you might be able to reach it with a grabby tool.

Thanks. I can't see it in the filler pipe but might try disconnecting it when the tank is close to empty to see if I can see it then.

Try to get hold of an endoscope / borescope.. they are cheap from ebay, and connect to your phone/laptop to see inside the tank. I would try to attach the camera (use cable ties not tape) to a thin steel rod that you can easily shape, perhaps with the end bent in a 'hook' shape. Make sure you do not get the 'hook' on the fuel pump/fuel level sender unit. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Might be handy having something like this to make a grab for it. |

A good friend of mine did this a couple of years back on his 300tdi.
Much internet research led him to the conclusion that hundreds of people had suffered the same fate over the years to no ill effect. 2 days later, his managed to block the fuel tank outlet and leave him stranded, fortunately only 20 yards from home. Later that afternoon, we had several fun hours dropping the tank so that we could turn it upside down and shake it out again. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll invest in an endoscope/borescope to start. I rather not drop the tank unless I have to.

It really isn't hard and doesn't take long to drop and refit the tank on a 110 (be thankful it's not a 90). You need a special tool to remove the pick-up retaining ring though (not expensive).

Damn, that’s bad luck.
Hope you can get it sorted soon. Out of interest this rubber piece, is that the tip of the spout? I’m guessing this is the part not the seal between the spout and fuel can neck. If so, I’ve got one on the spout I have, I take it I should remove it from the end of the spout then? You’ve also got to be careful of small caps accidentally getting dropped down there such as fuel additive ones. Seems impossible, but easily done if not careful with the fuel cap taken off. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

In the good old days Land-Rovers had strainers on the tank filler to prevent this sort of mishap.

Yes the caps of fuel additive bottles I'm always careful with. The rubber part of the spout is similar to this one. Needs to be removed before use. |

I bet it’s still in the filler pipe. I bought a flexible claw tool (Rolson) a couple of years ago, end lights up if needed and magnetic, about £12. Have you tried pushing a thin wire down the filler neck/tube to see if you get any resistance?
If it’s detected in the tube the claw would help to get it out. Also great for scaring grandchildren |

Doesn’t that rubber tip have the mesh pre filter in though or is that in built into the metal part?
The filter being designed to catch any minor debris that may have got in the can. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |

The rubber tip that I lost into the tank was just an extension to the filler attachment. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the filler pipe.
I removed the filler pipe at the tank end so I could get a better look with an endoscope but could not find the offending object. I did see what looks like a seal from a fuel additive bottle however I did not want to poke about to much in case I did some damage or got the scope caught in the pump/sender unit. So it's tank out sometime in the not to distance future. Two photos taken with the scope – one of what I think is a metal seal from an additive bottle and one the sender unit float on the bottom of a almost empty tank.
