I have tried several options over the years, between my knees, nose buried in wood, bolt down clamps on tailgate, the bang in endgrain clamps and have never managed to get as good a result sharpening in the field compared to using a vice in the workshop.
 Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I had a bakrak towball clamp kicking about similar to https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173190166678 ts saw maint day, as its raining a lot here so thought time to sort something. Picked up a cheap 4" £20 amazon vice, bolted them together and works a treat, very solid setup. The whole option wouldn't be cheap but it works well without permanently fitting a vice to one vehicle/trailer. Advantage is it can be used on multi vehicles as long as they have a tow ball. Also bolted a spare towball to front of my small Click image to enlarge trailer so can be used there. Holds small saw no issue plus my 395 no problem on a large bar. If i am on a wood day I tend to be out for the day, yep take spare saws and chains but still like to sharpen every two fills of fuel. Nice! I could knock something like this up very easily as I have a 2" receiver.
That being said I am dreadful at sharpening chains despite following tutorials and guides. Determined to master it though! > 110 XS Double Cab |

With a bit of practice it's easy enough to sharpen without a vice. If you don't have the patience then buy a log vice for under a tenner. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

it can be done without a vice but i never get it quite as good as with a vice. maybe i just dont do it enough! Cheers

For Hank I was suggesting practicing different methods until he finds what best for him.
I think your trailer mounted vice looks good and it obviously provides complete stability at your preferred working height. Could be useful for other stuff too. Everyone has their favourite method of sharpening in the field. Ask 6 arborists and you'll get 10 different answers! WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

Likewise, I can never get a decent result, so for the amount I use my saw, it makes life so much easier to just buy a new chain.
