On a slight tangent here but oddly enough a not dissimilar problem. It's about my sex life. Same symptoms...... Whistle 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

bear100 - I took the MAP sensor out yesterday and it does look a bit sooted up. I am waiting for some more contact cleaner to arrive today. Fingers crossed. The tempreture guage rises margingally when i first turn on, and then goes up as per normal as i drive on the times that it actually starts. It deosn't show the issue of rocketing up that other people have seen.

Wyvern - It is happening with only one set of keys in the car, and it doesn't appear to matter which set i use. Funnily when i drove it home from collecting it i had both sets of keys in the car, but didn't have any problems. I probably just had the second set far enough away.

Dinnu - Will check the crank position sensor is clean and tight.

I also have a vcv arriving today if the above don't work. After reading all the posts on here it seams like a good spare to have. Looking at where it is, and reading a how to change it guide, i am not looking forward to that job.

Today I cleaned the MAP sensor, which was very sooty. Sadly this didn't solve the problem.

A new VCV arrived. When I removed the old one the O-ring half way down the shaft was perished with the edge coming off, and the socket was wet.

I fitted the new one, but then it would crank but not start, I checked there were no loose cables, that all the seals were seated correctly but I couldn't get it to run. It appeared to be a cheap copy. I have ordered a denso one, so hopefully that will improve things. I fitted the old one back in and went back to the prior status of started then stalling.

Here is a video in case someone spots something else. There are two attempts. The first with no throttle input. The second with a constant throttle input, although you will see the engine hunting.



10 mins I tried again and it started and drove fine.

I had this last year once, it was the VCV on its way out but occurred after using a different fuel station which I no longer use.
I wonder if there was something up with it, went back to Esso where I normally went and it never did again but I’ve changed the VCV since.

Lower MPG, poor throttle response and feeling laggy and down on power are typical. And rev hunting in very cold weather. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

It is still not solved unfortunately. The vcv was changed as the seal was damaged anyway.

It has been with EH Douglas near Banbury for the last week. Day 1 it was serviced and passed its MOT. Day 2 they went to fiddle with some other things and it wouldn't start. As soon as they find the answer i will post it on here.

The defender is back from the garage. The diagnostics they ran showed a cam shaft issue. They changed the sensor and it appears to be fixed, or rather after three starts it has not given me any problems yet. Lets see how the next few weeks go with my fingers crossed.

Just a quick update five days later that the problem still appears to be solved. As with others i probably won't be 100% certain until it has started first time 100 times, but so far so good.

Thanks for posting the update, it is always useful to hear what the solution to a problem was since it builds the collective knowledge.

An intermittent signal from the camshaft sensor would certainly cause this problem, although failures of this sensor are relatively rare. As I recall, it is actually only used during the start-up sequence to allow the ECM to differentiate between the exhaust and compression strokes of No 1 cylinder and hence determine the synchronisation for the injectors.

The crankshaft sensor output is of course ambiguous since it will indicate No 1 TDC every revolution, irrespective of the stroke. Once the engine is running, the camshaft sensor isn't needed until the next start-up.
