The shipping line I worked for wouldn’t accept bookings for the stuff after one of the ships suffered a huge explosion with Ammonium Nitrate in a container about 12 years ago. According to a scientist interviewed on Today this morning there are two versions, one that is the full only and the other that is manufactured to be “less” explosive, not free from risk though.

Don't know about the cost as they were personal issue as my ordinary tools were confiscated and securely stored ,even down to steel rules. Cream cheese? these weren't as we often had to flog ( use a hammer on a spanner) the nut off bolts. We had to decontaminate everything we had used at the end of the day to make sure no metal fragments had become embedded in our tools. I have just remembered that we had bright red overalls instead of the dark blue everyone else wore, this was so the laundry could take precautions when washing them, every thing else we wore was green with a 2" black band again so they were cleaned separately. Our laundry was separate to anything else and the waste water was sent to the plant for product recovery. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

Good grief. That sounds horrible stuff.
This is the same stuff that we see in those white poly bags used by farmers for nitrogen spreading on the land? I believe these poly bags were banned in Northern Ireland at one point. Not sure if the restrictions were ever lifted? Quite easy to make a blast bomb with a poly bag. Tim, is the agricultural fertiliser the product which they have decreased levels in? They also poor this stuff into the holes with explosives to make the bang bigger (technical term) when blasting rock Even Israel has offered humanitarian help. Lots of innocent people involved who were totally blameless for this and if they are lucky enough to have survived, have very little left |

Maybe it was just cheap muck that my company bought. I often wonder what happened to them? We were working on digesters in sewage treatment works where there was a risk from methane. |

Two things strike me as very wrong about this.
Firstly how awful it is that it happened and how easily it could have been prevented by following all the guidelines on safe storage of hazardous materials. Secondly, how unforgivable it is that a starving country which has to import most of its food was storing fertiliser which could have been used to help feed its people is just wrong. The crushing irony being that the fertilizer which was being stored instead of used to grow food has taken out the majority of the grain silos meaning that the grain which is incoming is not going to be able to be unloaded. They are talking about 300000 people have been left homeless.
That photo, Intercept, just shows the utter destruction. It appears that many of the port officials are under house arrest. The product arrived on a ship which developed technical difficulties. The boat was inspected and then promptly abandoned by the owners. The Ammonium Nitrate was off loaded and stored and there is now the blame game of who said what, who ignored requests, who ignored memos etc etc etc. Reminds us of Grenfell? Everyone wants a job with a high and mighty title, but no one wants the responsibility. Agree entirely, shaggydog in what you said...... |

ya geezer! its blew the full works to the point it, its exposed the sea! From the look of the photos and from what i read about it. It looks worse than a warzone! it said the reaction blew out windows 15 miles away from the site.
