TD5 Defender won't start...
Hi All, I need some advice, please!!

My 2001 TD5 won't start. I'd driven it the day before and it was running fine. It turns over but there's no fuel pump sound and no yellow glow plug light (The three red lights all light).

I've checked all fuses and all of the relays under the seat and in front of the gear stick. All fuses have 12v on both sides and the relays work with a continuity tester and 12v source.

I've bypassed the inertia switch and checked that there's current through it with the ignition on (125mA)

The fob is behaving oddly, in that the red immobiliser light goes out but no longer flashes when I unset the alarm (just indicators flash). I've changed the fob battery, which made no difference

I've been advised to check the output to the fuel pump (which I'll do) but the absence of glow plug light suggests to me that the problem is with the ECU or inputs to it?

I need a Nanocom, I think! I'm out of ideas...

Oh...and I've checked the red plug for oil. I found some oil about 12 mths ago and changed the injector loom. There wasn't a huge amount of oil, so I don't think the ECU will have been damaged but I've not opened it up.
There's none there now.

Should I open the ECU and check for oil inside?

When mine did the same a while back the problem was the fuel pump failing to deliver sufficient pressure. Not a cheap fix, but a new pump resolved it. The Nanocom didn't reveal any useful information.

Thanks both.

Intercept - That's useful, thanks. I'll check to see whether the ECU is sending power to the fuel pump. Did your glowplug light also stop coming on?

Not that I recall. Td5 doesn't normally need glowplug usage in UK climes, so my ignition key doesn't linger in that position.

Could be a few things.

Take the black plug off the ECU, wait a few minutes and plug it in again. This soveld my problems when I was working on my Cruise control and I lost connection to the ecu. I lost reaction to the throttle if if I wanted to restart I had also cranking but not starting.

It could also be a problem with communication between your ECU and the AS10. Gives also cranking and not starting.

When my fuelpump failed I could drive but had no power, but then the fuelpump can fail in different ways.

Disconnect the battery for some time. That helped on my Disco 3 for all kinds off electronic problems. Roel
