Not sure I was Baulking at the VDO tacho......the tacho is the one that has to best match the original instrumentation as its fitted in the dash binnacle.
The Fourby unit and the VDO unit look very similar. One is priced at £120, the other at £40......and I know the Fourby one will work in my defender. Stack were the only gauges that I could get as a matching set (EGT / Clock / Voltmeter).....unless I ordered the VDO EGT gauge from Australia - so had to pay the price. 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless 2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed 1997 300tdi d90 - now with electrics that work! - now with a brand new custom made soft top fitted …...…...............….new chassis now all fixed and driving like new 2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara) 2016 D4 battery magically fixed with NOCO charger |

Alex - looking good with the Stack setup. Quick question - did you have any issues with the fuel gauge? Is it plumber into the standard sender? Was any witchcraft involved in getting it set up?
Cheers, Paul |

Hi Paul,
It’s very easy to set up the fuel gauge. It uses the standard sender unit. The gauge has several ‘pre set’ ranges it can operate from and I found one of these was very similar to the LR sender so you can select that mode and it’s good. But I did later use the custom setting where you empty the tank (or almost) and tell the gauge it’s empty, then fill the tank and again tell the gauge it’s full and it then locks in these readings to the gauge so it is the spot on accurate. Cheers, Alex |

Sorry to pester folks but more questions...….
Fitted the Rev counter from Fourby - ACE works great, but VERY bright when lit up. Next, fitted the LED lamps (again from Fourby) to the remaining instruments.....very disappointing. The lamp holders have an existing green filter attached so 'muffle' the extra brightness from the new LEDs. Set about what can only be describes as 'butchering' the speedo to get rid of the green filters and the results are......acceptable. Set about doing the same to the fuel and temperature gauges and the results are not so good....and I think I might have busted the Fuel gauge as it now reads Full, when only three quarters full of diesel So might have to bight the bullet and replace the fuel and temperature gauges with VDO units so...…. Temp gauge - 40C - 120C range ok (?) & presumably have to pair up with appropriate sensor - (thread size?) https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/vdo-vision...-010-002k/ Fuel gauge - any fancy calibration required / new float sensor required etc (?) - seems the STACK unit an easy fit from Alex's response above. https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/vdo-vision...ge-250056/ Thanks 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless 2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed 1997 300tdi d90 - now with electrics that work! - now with a brand new custom made soft top fitted …...…...............….new chassis now all fixed and driving like new 2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara) 2016 D4 battery magically fixed with NOCO charger |

Any takers please for the Thread size for the temperature sender unit (defender 300tdi) - Demon Tweeks couldn't advise .
Presumably its a direct swop out for the sender located under to Thermostat housing Thanks 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless 2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed 1997 300tdi d90 - now with electrics that work! - now with a brand new custom made soft top fitted …...…...............….new chassis now all fixed and driving like new 2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara) 2016 D4 battery magically fixed with NOCO charger |

Ahhh sorry!
However, it is still a 1/8 NPT thread (fairly common for sender units) |

So, some progress...….
Mudconsole fitted out (on the face only, still need to sort out the 'rat's nest' of cables / relays required) Also, got the new VDO gauges for Fuel & water temperature, with the Fourby Rev Counter in the main binnacle. Waiting on Stack EGT on back order Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless 2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed 1997 300tdi d90 - now with electrics that work! - now with a brand new custom made soft top fitted …...…...............….new chassis now all fixed and driving like new 2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara) 2016 D4 battery magically fixed with NOCO charger |

just fitted mine yesterday.
The Stack EGT probe was pre bent at 90degrees as yours and then I found it necessary to bend the tip further to get further penetration ( ) into the exhaust stream - I used a 6mm dep socket to hold the probe as I bent it. A couple of things I have noticed since installation...….. The EG temperature as read on the gauge didn't rise much above 300 degrees...…..I was expecting about 600!!!! There was loads of exhaust gas passing the blanking plate and entering the cab On further investigation the upper fixing for the blanking plate was a stud welded in place. The base of the weld was untidy - preventing the gasket & plate from seating properly. Ground down the weld splatter as much as possible, cleaned the mating face and got a new gasket. Seamed miles better but I wetted the exhaust manifold around the EGR blank and squirted on some fairy liquid. - Behold the Bubbles!!!!!!!! So I still have exhaust gas passing (including through the probe boss and Allen key hole ) Would be interesting to know if others did this test procedure if they would get bubbles also?????? 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless 2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed 1997 300tdi d90 - now with electrics that work! - now with a brand new custom made soft top fitted …...…...............….new chassis now all fixed and driving like new 2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara) 2016 D4 battery magically fixed with NOCO charger |

Hi Frenchy,
I don't have a photo but had to bend tip of probe too, think I used a couple of pairs of pliers and it was easy enough to do. Not noticed any leakage as such but do have a bit of carbon/soot around point where probe enters brass adaptor - will try some soapy water later and report back. I did 500 miles or so up north and back last week and got the kids to monitor/record temps on different hills and steepness of hill. Think at idle it's sitting around 200 but 450-550 was normal on small to bigger hills respectively and only got it up to 600 on one of bigger hills we powered up so maybe something not quite right with yours?
