I was a nurse/safety advisor on an oil site in the middle of the Gobi and had one of these ambulances for my use to cover the various drill sites - they were really good off-road and I was one of the few who never had to be recovered ! however they are very light weight and tend to bounce around a bit at speed on the flat ... but looked like an old commer post office van with a suspension lift! (check out John Mann;s book ‘Gobi - tracking the desert’ for some pictures of the site and info on what we got up to ... great photos and brings back memories ! Russian ambulances and jeeps, at the time that was all the local guys drove...
We used to deploy the trekking groups from UB down to Bulgan near Dalanzadgad in 8 of the ambulances. Would spend 2 days driving flat out across the desert 8 abreast, the wacky races comes to mind.... Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |
