Hot weather and alcohol hand sanitiser
Just a heads up if any of you have an alcohol hand sanitiser in the car. Today a warning has been issued about the risk of fire.

The alcohol vapours reach a flashpoint, according to experts, triggering fires after igniting within vehicles

A spokesperson from CE Safety said: “Our advice is to remove alcohol-based hand sanitisers from in their cars. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Thanks for that tip. Bit annoying as I've just put a bottle in each of my cars Big Cry One of them is parked on the drive in full sun so I'll go take it out straight away. Defender 90XS SW

Saw that the other day, best left out I suppose. Not only that it does vaporise and wick away unless completely sealed.

Then there is the possible effect on steering wheel materials. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I suspect that the can of WD40 in the car is a far greater risk than the hand sanitiser.

The hand sanitiser is more than likely to reach its Flashpoint in a warm car........ given that most alcohol based hand sanitisers can be ignited on a cold day so are already well above their flashpoint!
The auto-ignition temperature is unlikely to be achieved in a car though as that is likely to be a couple of hundred degrees C..... stuff like your dash will melt first.

As an example Petrol has a flashpoint of -40ish degC but doesn't spontaneously combust on any day in the UK, needs to get to the auto-ignition temp of c280 deg C.

If you are worried about your hand sanitiser, just don't set fire to it and you should be fine Thumbs Up

If you follow Martin's link you will see that this myth has been fairly comprehensively debunked.

Bother, I assumed this was going to be a topic about if it's good stuff to drink on hot days....

Oh well, back to the beer again.

I have read the text in Martins link and interesting reading it was. I also looked at the second link re the aviation industry and hand sanitisers. As there was no formal conclusion in Martins link it was hard to judge the facts in a scientific way as there were no experimental data given on tests.

There were also a few anomalies and contradictions such as alcohol sanitisers ‘can spontaneously combust” if left too long in a hot car. We won’t say that this is impossible, but we will say that it is extremely unlikely’. Cautious drivers may want to store their hand sanitizer (and any other liquids kept in plastic bottles) out of direct sunlight in their glove boxes or centre consoles.

Not impossible is good enough advice for me I tend to err on the side of caution about safety. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Auto ignition temperature of hand sanitizer is around 380 Degrees C apparently.

Auto ignition temperature of petrol is around 280 degrees C apparently.

I've had both in my car on very hot days Laughing And anecdotally, there's a bottle of hand sanitiser in my truck that's been there at least 2 years.

Indeed, and although I doubt it will combust I do periodically sweep the car for strange products which SWMBO may have stashed. This is more in case they leak than in case the deflagrate, though.

You can't be too careful!
